Dear listers, I have searched, over the past year, for my Grandfathers (Michael SWEENEY) ship that brought him to the U.S. In doing so I made a data base of all the Sweeneys that I found, about 250 SWEENEYS. I found one possibility out of all those names. I am still searching for a while longer. Sooooo I have these names and am willing to look up your SWEENEY. Here are the dates I have: Feb - Jul 1863, Mar - Dec 1864, Jan - Dec 1865 and Jan - Apr 1866. I only ask that you have GOOD reason to believe that they came over between 1863 and 1866. The family rumor is that Michael came over between these dates and he was born in 1849. Therefore he would have been 14 and 17 years old. Contrary to general belief, ships list do not give the town are county they came from, only Ireland. It does contain the date of arrival to New York, name of ship, name of person/s and age.
