    3. In case anyone else is interested. I found a book at one of our research/genealogy libraries in Southern California, called, The MacSweeney's. I wasn't looking for Sweeney material at the time. When I go back I will get sure photocopies of part of the book, and check the copyright information out. If if is safe, I will post the Coats of Arms of the Sweeney Clans, as they changed over the years. There are about 12 of them. There are descriptions and a bit of info on each. I will add them to my site and post the site addy when it is done. Probably after the 11th of December, as I am rushed until then! Believe me, I have so much wanted to get back down and do that, and some work I am doing on Nelson County, KY!!! Nelson may come first after the info is obtained. Will update the list with info on my progress. Happy Thanksgiving to you all All of my Pict Descendants! Christen

    2. David Swinney
    3. I have a rudimentary rendition of the Sweeney arms under the "Resources" section of my website at http://www.cafes.net/swinney along with a midi version of the clan march. There's a smaller, neater version of the arms at http://www.sweeneyclan.com which I strongly encourage everyone to visit. If you don't have their pamphlets on Irish Sweeney history, you can order them there online. There is also a crest version at http://www.ireland-information.com/heraldichall/irishsurnames.htm Does anyone know when or to whom the original grants of arms occurred? 1. Roll Call - McSweeney , Miles and Edmund
    2. WE3NJC
    3. Miles is a fairly common man's name among McSweeney and Sweeney families, apparently due to a famous Sweeney ancestor. My Miles McSweeney was born in Missouri, probably St. Louis, around 1860. By 1880 he was married to Ellen Scollard and they had two children (Mary and Edward). They had several more children but only Mary (May), Edward, Michael. Sara (Sadie) and Myles lived beyond 1900. Ellen died in 1894 and Miles vanished about the same time. He is not mentioned in the coroner's investigation of Ellen's death so I assume he had already left.. Daughter Mary (May) married Ed Podgen and raised a family in St.Louis. Edward married but died childless in 1906 and was a deputy constable. Michael died in 1910 - no information on his life as yet. Sara (Sadie) married Charles Miller -- stayed in St. Louis and had 4 kids. Myles moved to Jackson, Michigan and married and had a son named Myles. Only Myles retained the "Mc-" spelling. The others changed to "Sweeney". Family tradition is that Miles went to California. I have no evidence to support this idea as yet. Miles did have relatives in New York City and his daughter, Sara, lived with them briefly after her mother's death and was probably there in 1900. My current guess is that Miles McSweeney was the son of Edmund and Ellen McSweeney who previously lived in the same house as Miles in 1880. Edmund died before 1870. the 1870 census shows Ellen and a 10-year-old son named Jerry. I'm speculating that this Jerry was Miles. Any suggestions, comments, questions or information is welcome. 3. Jeanne and all interested; There were 4 Moses Sweeney's in VA at the time my ancestory (who went on to Liberty, KY) was there. My Moses served in the Revolutionary war, and one other Moses Sweeney of VA did also. I'd love to be able to sort the families out and have something on the Moses Sweeney's of VA on my webpage. If anyone wants to do this with me, let me know. I have too many coals in the fire to do it alone. Christen

Mostly I have the lines of John, Charles and Job, sons of Moses and Elizabeth Sweeney. If you want a complete list of the other children's names, visit my site. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/+AH4-rosamili/index.htm Christen Let me know if you research this further, what you find, okay? I have the book, The Family of Moses Sweeney", and will while browsing keep the "stranger" Sweeney names you mentioned in mind.

    3. A history of cities & towns in Iowa notes by Thomas Mitchell, founder of Mitchellville, Iowa that a William Sweeney arrived in 1851. 1860 census lists William Sweeney @ Four Mile Township, Rising Sun, Ia. Records show William Sweeney and his wife Jane as charter members of Rising Sun Church of Crist which was organized in 1854. Census records show children to include Thomas Mitchell Sweeney, born in 1851 in Ia. Thomas Mitchell Sweeney married Laura Emma Shivers and moved to Flathead County, MT, where they lived until their death. Thomas Mitchell Sweeney was my Great-grandfather. One of my Mother's memories of him was that he was a fireman in DesMoines, Ia. I hope someone on this list has knowledge of this Sweeney. Faye McLeland The Oregon Coast
