I think the idea of posting ships passenger list with the Sweeney surname is a real good way for all of us to someday find our elusive ancestors. Appreciate what Claudia is doing. Sandy

I am searching for any information on Anthony J. Sweeney who I believe married Mary A. Linihan in Knox, IL in 1875. They had 3 children, Anthony L. born April 14, 1876, Henry and Anistasia. Mary died in childbirth. Henry was last heard of in Brooklyn, New York and had some association with a parking garage. He had a daughter named Diane. Anistasia lived in Manchester, Ohio and her married name was Nail. Anthony Lafayette moved to Florida and had lost all contact with his family when died in 1951. Any information, past or present would be greatly appreciated.
Hello Everyone, I'm looking for some Sweeney information. That is my maiden name but most of the records I have found so far use the Swinney spelling. I have found an Elizabeth Sweeney (spelled Sweanny) on the 1850 Washington County, MO census (b 1802). I believe she was already widowed by the 1850 census. I do not know her husband's first name. Records indicate he was born in KY. The census indicates that she was born in VA. Other records indicate that she was born in KY. Her children (or those who lived with her) according to the 1850 census were named Edmond, John, Airs, Nathaniel, Wiliam, Susan, Harrison, Henry, Mary J. I also know that she received a pension from the civil war but those records could not be located by the National Archives. Any chance anyone is researching the same family?
Hello all. I'm researching the following: Patrick Sweeney, born in NY state ab. 1859, married to Nora DOUGHERTY. Moved to Scranton, PA (Minooka section). Children: Anthony, John, Michael, Anne and Martin (born 1880). Patrick had a brother, John, who was Jessup's first postmaster and who had a son, James. Any info greatly appreciated! These Sweeneys have been a bit hard to find. Thanks, Terri
It's been a long time since I've had mail from this list also. I'm looking for Miles/Myles Sweeney from somewhere in Ireland, who came through Pennsylvania met a woman in WIS by the name of ELLEN EGAN married about 1864 had THOMAS in 1866 in MICH. The next 4 children were also born in MICH. They were WILLIAM 1870, MARY ANN (MOLLY) 1872, HONORA (NORA) 1875, ISABELLA (ELLA) 1878. Then they moved to Holt county, NEB where my gf JOHN MILES was born in 1879. MILES had gone to SD to work in the mines & was killed because he never knew his last son. His widow moved the family back to the UP of MICH. If any of this sounds like a connection to you, please email. I appreciate any leads offered. Recently, on another surname list there was a discussion about some people, of the same descent, having inherited a particular physical characteristic (in that case - a bent little finger). This has prompted me to ask if anyone knows of, what might be called, an extra-digit propensity among the Sweeneys? I once knew a Sweeney who had twelve fingers and twelve toes. I have no idea whether this is the sort of thing that could be inherited or whether it would be a random occurance. Incidently, the Bible, in 2 Samuel 21:20, tells of a brother of Goliath who had the same peculiarity Bob
Hello all I am looking for information of the parents of Mary Ellen SWEENEY born 1888 in Brown Street, LIVERPOOL. Her parents were John SWEENEY and Mary SWEENEY formerly HENRY. Mary Ellen also had a brother called Jack. On her marriage certificate in 1911, John's occupation is given as a 'Cotton Porter'. Any information would be gratefully received, Thanks from Jean, in sunny Cumbria
Catherine Sweeney was my great-great grandmother. She had a daughter Nellie Wilson, who was christened in the catholic church in Apalachicola, Florida in 1879. Her husband was John Wilson, and it was a second or third marriage for both of them. In that same town, in the 1850 census, there was a Patrick Sweeney from Ireland, with a 7 year old son Thomas, from Florida. There was nothing before or after this census for them, and I cannot connect Catherine with this family. There were Sweeneys in Florida in Marian Co, and other counties in the panhandle part of Florida, but not many. There is a Sweeney graveyard, with no marked graves also in a neighboring county. Anyone who could help me connect Patrick with Catherine? Or anyone hear of a Catherine Sweeney of about that age. (a daughter born in 1879?)...Sure appreciate it...Regards Charlene Newell
I agree, this list has been sort of quiet. Here is the Sweeney I am looking for info on. Patrick, born abt. 1835, County Cork, Ireland. He had a son Patrick Jr. born in Wales abt. 1863. I have NO idea when they arrived in America all I know is it was after the birth of Patrick Jr. and before the birth of my Gr. Aunt Mary Ellen Sweeney in Butler County Pa. abt. 1877. He married Nancy Ann McCullough Early. Does anyone have him in their notes? Sandy
I haven't seen anything on this list and all of a sudden, here you all are. I will post mine again. My grandfather, Charles Francis Sweeney, came here in 1883, to Lowell, Massachusetts from Rugeley, England. His parents were James Sweeney and Margaret Chadbourne Sweeney. James and his brother Charles, named their first boys after each other and apparently this had been done generations before, very confusing even when you know this. \ I am not sure where in Ireland the family came from. For some reason, somebody once mentioned Killarney to Belston, England. Before that, I have been told from northern Ireland, lots of brother and they all left, some to southern Ireland, some to Australia and some to England. If this is familiar to anybody, I would love to hear from you. James'mother, Margaret, was descended from Patrick Dooley, I think of Killarney. There are also Nelfords in this line. Thanks, Barbara Sweeney Valente of Hingham, MA

Thomas SWEENEY is found on the 1871 census living in Cardiff, Wales..He was born in 1835-36 in Ireland and is married to Mary Ann SULLIVAN, also born in Ireland..Five children are listed as being born in Cardiff..Thomas, age 9..Elizabeth, age 7..Mary Ann, age 5..Alice, age 4..Patrick, age 2..Another child, John, was born later in 1871..The family was living at 6 Ellen St., Cardiff, County of Glamorgan, Wales.. From John's naturalization record, the family arrive at the port of Boston in December of 1873 .. The family is in Newport, Rhode Island by 1876 and four more children are born in Newport..Joseph b. 1876..Augustus b. 1878.. William b. 1881.. Catherine b. 1883.. The 1900 Rhode Island census states that there were 9 children living at the time of the census, out of 12 children born to Mary Ann SWEENEY, so I am missing 2 somewhere along the line.. I have information on most but not all of these children..Family lore has it that Thomas SWEENEY b. 1835-36 served with the British Army in the Crimea War..Joseph b. 1876 served in the Spanish-American War and later changed his name to Gordon JOHNSTONE..He moved to NYC and became an actor and a published poet..John b. 1871 worked as a telegrapher for the Newport Daily News in Newport..Patrick (age 2 above) was a Chief of Police in Newport..Catherine and Elizabeth moved to NYC..They never married.. My next step is to find the passenger record for the port of Boston in December of 1873.. Hoping someone else is researching one of these Sweeneys!! Claudia Sweeney CT USA

Hi. I'm looking for info on Lucinda Sweeney (b. Jan. 30, 1806) I'm not sure where she was born but probably on the Kingston Peninsula, New Brunswick. She married Abraham Prince (b. June 28, 1793) They had at least two daughters, Abigail (1837-1868) and Elizabeth. Possibly a Matilda also. The family lived on the Kingston Peninsula, New Brunswick. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks, William Jones
A history of cities & towns in Iowa notes by Thomas Mitchell, founder of Mitchellville, Iowa that a William Sweeney arrived in 1851. 1860 census lists William Sweeney @ Four Mile Township, Rising Sun, Ia. Records show William Sweeney and his wife Jane as charter members of Rising Sun Church of Crist which was organized in 1854. Census records show children to include Thomas Mitchell Sweeney, born in 1851 in Ia. Thomas Mitchell Sweeney married Laura Emma Shivers and moved to Flathead County, MT, where they lived until their death. Thomas Mitchell Sweeney was my Great-grandfather. One of my Mother's memories of him was that he was a fireman in DesMoines, Ia. I hope someone on this list has knowledge of this Sweeney. Faye McLeland The Oregon Coast
