Mike, I'd appreciate it if you could look for John Sweeney, with wife Ann Jane (nee Devine) and daughter Mary E Sweeney. Mary was born 15 Aug 1863 and christened 19 Aug in County Cork. I believe that the family came over while Mary was a small child. Best wishes Ralph P Carpenter great-grandson of Mary

    3. Mike: Merry Christmas to you too. I don't intend to bother you by asking for a lookup, but I would like to ask where you found all those lists. I've just finished going through the Rootsweb collection of ships' lists looking for New York Sweeneys, but I'm almost sure that the people I'm looking for were here before 1863. My mother had an Uncle Tim Sweeney on Staten Island. He was living on Barker Street when I knew him. Next I found in an 1886 Staten Island directory that there was a Timothy Sweeney on Barker Street back in those days. He wasn't the Uncle Tim I knew, who would have been about 10 or so in 1886 whereas the chap in the directory was working as a gardener and seems to have been a head of household. Finally, I discovered a Timothy Sweeney on Staten Island in the 1860 census; he may be the gardener from the 1886 directory, but he's not in your compilation of immigrants. I couldn't find any Timothy among the Sweeneys aboard the ships that Rootsweb has put online so far. I strongly suspect that this gardener chap was my great-grandfather, so I'd like to track him down, if possible. Here's all I know about him: My grandfather, Jim Sweeney, was Uncle Tim's older brother. According to the 1920 census their father was born in Ireland, and that's all it says about him--not even his name. I can't find him on my grandfather's birth record, because there are none preserved for Staten Island in 1869 when my grandfather was born. I could try a baptismal record, except that the parish that the family always used (including me) wasn't established until my grandfather was five years old. So can you give me some tips on other sources of immigrant ships? Seems to be my best bet as things stand at present. Thanks very much. Jim Donnelly Hyattsville, Maryland

    1. Sweeneys N.Y. ships list 1863-1866
    2. Mike and Betty Sweeney
    3. Dear listers, I have searched, over the past year, for my Grandfathers (Michael SWEENEY) ship that brought him to the U.S. In doing so I made a data base of all the Sweeneys that I found, about 250 SWEENEYS. I found one possibility out of all those names. I am still searching for a while longer. Sooooo I have these names and am willing to look up your SWEENEY. Here are the dates I have: Feb - Jul 1863, Mar - Dec 1864, Jan - Dec 1865 and Jan - Apr 1866. I only ask that you have GOOD reason to believe that they came over between 1863 and 1866. The family rumor is that Michael came over between these dates and he was born in 1849. Therefore he would have been 14 and 17 years old. Contrary to general belief, ships list do not give the town are county they came from, only Ireland. It does contain the date of arrival to New York, name of ship, name of person/s and age. I'm still working on 1863 which should a few more weeks. Merry Xmas Mike Sweeney

    3. Hi there- Just put an old photo up at my site...It was in the McLain family possession and is totally unidentifiable. It is a group under a tree in probably early to mid 1800 dress. Anyone who might know, I would sincerely appreciate what your educated guesses are. Also, I have NO idea who the families are but the collatoral lines in this time were: McLAIN, STALLINGS, SWEENEY, HALL, PHILLIPS, PEAK, LEAMAN, BEALL, MAGRUDER, BEAM. The area is very likely Marion, Nelson or Washington County, KY but some moved on to Topeka, Kansas also. The photo is at my master site listed below, just under the photo at the top... If any are interested in viewing. 3. Interesting on the Hugh Sweeney's mentioned in the prior to emails. The 1860 Latrobe Borough, Westmoreland County PA census lists Hugh Sweney age 50 (born @1810 in Ireland Unity (nee Devers, also known as Dever, Diver, Divers, etc) age 40 born in Ireland Edward 8 Cecilia 5 Mary 4 I have 'lost' this family and can supply no further details on the Sweney side. I have limited info on the Unity Devers side. Unity's parents were Edward Devers @1775-1869 and Unity 1790-1862. Edward and family arrived in the USA on Dec 21, 1811 on the USS Mariner from Londonderry to New London CT. Edward was believed to be from the County Donegal. 3. Most of the Sweeney's I have heard of in 4 years on the internet, are from Donegal...I am pretty sure they are somehow related. The clan was I believe very close knit, as they were part of the Pictish Nation of Scotland, who became extinct (My line...not proud of it), around 900 a.d. I believe they had strong ties...if we could just tap into where the records were kept...or what sources may be available. I'll bet Ireland has something. I have looked through a few of the books in the Los Angeles Mormon Library...there must be others. My research is extensive, but this is the most interesting part of it to me. The Scottish heritage. I am Scottish also through the Magruder line mostly found around Neslon County, and that is what my work, From Liberty to Bardstown is all about. How the Sweeney's and Magruders ended up in Kentucky at the beginning of it's formation...around the 1780's. I know there are publications at that library, but they are not to check out, and it is 2 hours from here... unless there is no traffic...then a little less. I still have constraints...so cannot get to them. Does anyone have connections over the pond who could recommend published record books? 1. William Sweeney born 1882
    2. My William Sweeney was the son of John Sweeney and Ida Alice Whitcomb and was probably born in Iroquois Co., Illinois. His mother left his father about 1892 and moved to McDonald Co., Missouri where she married Henry Asa Herring. In the 1910 Federal Census William is shown with his mother (by then divorced from her 3rd husband, James White) in Jasper County, Missouri and he, too is shown as "divorced". I cannot find him after the 1910 Federal Census. His sister (my grandmother, Amanda Edith Sweeney Herring) married Frank Farris and died in 1917. He also had a half brother, George Herring and half sister, Katherine Viola Rachel Herring. Does anyone know what happened to William?

    1. William and Mary WATERS SWEENEY
    2. Colleen
    3. Hello Everyone, I'm researching William and Mary WATERS SWEENEY, born in Co. Donegal, emigrated to the US and settled in the Summit Hill, Mauch Chunk, Carbon Co. area of Pennsylvania. They were born approximately the 1820-1830s as one of their children was born in 1851. They had three daughters, but I only know one first name so far: Mary SWEENEY, born June 7, 1851, Summit Hill, PA, was my great great Grandmother. Another daughter of William and Mary (above) married Charles Lanning and moved to Denver, Colorado. I don't know anything about the third daughter or if they had other children. Mary SWEENEY (above paragraph) married Frank DEVERS on October 21, 1870, and settled in Allentown, Lehigh Co., PA. I'm just beginning to delve into this area of my family. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Luckily I live close enough that I can perhaps visit area churches, etc. All the Best, Colleen O'Byrne Mixed Nuts: http://www.uftree.com/UFT/WebPages/ColleenMOByrne/CAILIN/index.htm

    2. Does anyone have a record of an Arthur Ray Sweeney/Campbell marriage in Monroe,La (Ouchita Parish)? This would have been early 1900s. Thanks, Karen Moore Kerr PS I do not receive many messages from the Sweeneys either. Surely the Sweeneys are no less interested in their ancestry than any other surnames descendents.
