Sure, Brenda. I would be happy to try. :-) The worst that could happen is running into a dead end. The best result would be finding the microfilm images of the birth/baptism, confirmation records, utflytting records (which should be close to the date on the transcribed emigration record), and finding him in the 1865 Norwegian census. (You did indicate he came to the US in the late 1860s, right?) For those, I can send you source info, links back to the document, and also download the images and send them to you offline. If you found three emigration records that are good possibilites, send me the links. That will hopefully give me a general idea of a residence, at least a parish name. That makes searching in the correct location more likely. If you have three different possibilities, they need to be connected to records in specific locations and I can't know what that is until I know what the emigration record says. Comparisons between emigration and birth/baptism, Norwegian census data, etc., should determine which record is correct and hopefully eliminate the ones that are not. First name, patronymic name (both of which you already have; good!), any farm names you may or may not know about, date of birth, location if you have it. If memory serves, you are looking for a Peder Pedersen and you have an exact date of birth - but do you have a location (other than the generic name of Norway)? Exact name (allowances for spelling variations) and exact date of birth that you have are all to the good. If you have the death certificate from this side of the pond, and if the person giving the information for the death certificate knew your fellow well, the parents' names should be listed, which could help with identifying the correct birth and/or confirmation and/or census records, depending on what is online for which parish in which fylke. Was your person married or single when he came to the US? Did he live long enough to be listed in the 1900 US census? That should give a year of immigration (not always correct, but if not the correct year, usually they're within one or two years). Short of that, where was your fellow in the 1870 and 1880 US census? If you know where he settled, some states had censuses taken in years ending in 5. If you have .jpgs of the US census data where your fellow is mentioned, send them to me off-list (List email does not take attachments), or just tell me where he was and I'll look it up. Also, if you have a .jpg of the death certificate, send that, too. Sometimes when I'm really lucky there are odd clues in DCs. In any case, send me whatever you do know, whether you think it's important or not, and I'll sort through it and see what I can come up with. Beste, Bev P.S. Unless someone else wants to know this info, perhaps since we're transferring over to another country we should be off-line? Your choice. ________________________________ From: Brenda <brenda6@comcast.net> To: Bev Anderson <bevgand@yahoo.com>; sweden@rootsweb.com Sent: Sunday, September 23, 2012 1:40 PM Subject: Re: [SWEDEN] Norway Emigration Lookup Bev, A belated thank you for your detailed input. I found 3 records. Can you guide me to look-up births on the same site? I have name and birth date. Just do not know where he was born in Norway. Brenda in Seattle
Thanks so much for your offer, Bev. An Ancestry.com member has the birth info of Peter Peterson as 14 Jan 1838 which jives with his death certificate. This member states place as Glein, Nasne, Nordland, Norway. Do you have a way to confirm this death place? Brenda
OOPS, I meant to end the post with 'birth' place, not death place. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Brenda" <brenda6@comcast.net> To: "Bev Anderson" <bevgand@yahoo.com>; <sweden@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, September 28, 2012 4:45 PM Subject: Re: [SWEDEN] Norway Emigration Lookup > Thanks so much for your offer, Bev. At this moment, I can't get to the images in Digitalarkivet. They must be doing web site updates. I can get to the index for the images, but it comes up with an error page after that. [Well, at least I know that section of records is available.] This doesn't happen often, but on occasion it does. I'll keep checking until I go to sleep, but if I can't get through tonight, I'll do so in the morning.
