Did Sweden have the custom that Norway did that the mother couldn't attend church until she was introduced 6 weeks or so after childbirth and that she usually was not present for the baptism in church? Becky, Ingela Martenius has written some wonderful articles about Swedish customs. I think both "Rites of Passage" and "Births and Baptisms" answer your question. http://web.comhem.se/~u31263678/genealogy/ Short answer - yes, Swedish mothers were not present at child's baptism due to "churching" or kryktagning. Pat
That's correct. It was called "kyrktagning" (churching). Here is some very good information about this and other old Swedish customs. http://martenius.se/ Martin Annette Bowen skrev 2012-11-14 20:17: > Did Sweden have the custom that Norway did that the mother couldn't > attend church until she was introduced 6 weeks or so after childbirth > and that she usually was not present for the baptism in church? > > Annette > > On
