    1. [SWEDEN] Emigration lookup request in 1880 for Josef Anderson

    3. Could someone please do an emigration lookup for Josef Andersson, born 2 Feb 1845 in Skaraborg to Anderson Gabrielsson and Caisa Andersdotter? The family said he immigrated before his brother Alfred, who left Göteborg on 10 Sept 1880. Alfred's emigration is found in book 16:184:17865. US census records give Josef's immigration year as 1880 and 1881. I know the name is a common one. He was a single man and I think his destination was Red Wing, Minnesota. Thank you. Annette

Alfred Andersson came from Dimbo parish, Skaraborg county. There is an Alfred Andersson emigrating 1 Sep 1880 from Ottravad, which was "annex" parish in Dimbo "pastorat". He and his wife Augusta Kristina Karlsdotter, who seems to have emigrated with him, are found at Östgötagården in Ottravad, in AD Dimbo AI:16 (1876-1881) Bild 217 / sid 211 (AID: v26756.b217.s211, NAD: SE/GLA/13088). He was born 12 Feb 1857 in Skörstorp. His birth is found 12 Feb 1857 as Alfrid, parents Anders Gabrielsson and Cajsa Andersdotter in Geståsen(?), notice one of the witnesses is Mr. Joh. gabrielsson of N.Amerika. AD Hångsdala C:4 (1852-1860) Bild 8 / sid 7 (AID: v27797.b8.s7, NAD: SE/GLA/13238) Joseph's birth is recorded 2 Feb 1845, parents Anders Gabrielsson and Cajsa Andersdotter at Gaståsen under Orrholmen. AD Hångsdala C:3 (1836-1851) Bild 16 (AID: v27793.b16, NAD: SE/GLA/13238) They are found at Gaståsen in AD Skörstorp AI:3 (1849-1860) Bild 53 / sid 47 (AID: v27848.b53.s47, NAD: SE/GLA/13487): - "torpare" Anders Gabrielsson, born 1810-07(?)-26 Åsaka. - wife Cajsa Andersdotter, born 1814-07-30 here. - 9 children born 1836-1860. I haven't got time now to trace them in the household records until they emigrated, but I don't see Joseph in Swedish Census 1880, so he probably emigrated before the end of 1880. Perhaps someone can do a look-up in EMIBAS? // Bo johansson

    3. Thank you, Martin and Bo. Alfred and Augusta were my great grandparents, and in census records, Joseph was usually enumerated next to Alfred. I have most of the records for Alfred (and Augusta). I don't know if there was a cousin named Claes, but I do know that their brother Gustaf had a son with that name who later came to the US. Their father's brother, Johannes, was married to their mother's sister, Annika. I haven't researched that family. I show them as living on Dreven when they were sponsors for the baptism of Alfred in 1853. I visited Joseph's grave in Red Wing, Minnesota, in July and was given a picture of his only daughter, who never married and had no descendants. I thought I'd try to piece together what I could find out about Joseph's life. This give me a starting point. Thanks so much for your help. 3. At the time of his emigration Josef Andersson was registered in Slöta parish, but he did not live there. He had requested work certificates so he could live and work in other parishes, without being registered there. This makes it harder to find him. This is what is found in the church records: Post 641973 Andersson, Josef Arbetare (unmarried man) b. 2/2/1845 in Hångsdala, Skaraborgs län (Västergötland) Emigrated 4/29/1880 from Slöta, Skaraborgs län (Västergötland) to Amerika Source: SVAR; Household Examination Roll, vol. Slöta AI:10, p. 294 Emibas migration file ID: Slöta R 1880 012 The port records have one possible, emigrating just after that date. The original port record (Svar A0056903_00326) says they are first cousins. Does that fit your Josef Andersson?
