    1. [SWEDEN] Installing the "old" Emigrant CD on Windows 7

    3. Hej listers - I received an interesting e-mail yesterday in response to an e-mail I posted here a couple of years ago about problems installing the 2001 version of the Emigrant CD to a Windows 7 64-bit computer. Paul Norder has figured out that the problem is only in the installer, and has found a way to get around this. I have now been able to install and run this CD on Windows 7 64-bit, and I can even access the timetable database that Paul couldn't get to work. Here are the instructions Paul sent me: Commenting on your 14 Jul 2010 SWEDEN-L post . . . Yes, you can not install CD-Emigranten (2001) to Win7(x64) and perhaps not Win7(x32) either. But there is a sneaky way to do it . . . 1. Install CD-Emigranten (2001) on an XP machine, including the optional installation of all of the associated data files. Make sure you put all of those data files in the same directory (folder) as the program itself. When you are done, you should have a directory contains about 58 files, about 1.12 GB of total size. 2. (Optional) Create a back-up CD of the directory of files created in (1) above. 3. Copy the directory of files created in (1) above to a suitable location on your Windows 7 computer. Do NOT change the name of the directory! The path (location on the hard drive) can, however, be anything you wish. 4. On your Windows 7 computer, using the "Windows Explorer" program, open and browse the directory of CD-Emigranten (2001) files created in (3) above. Search for a file entitled: The_Swedish_Emigrant.exe. (The .exe portion of the filename may not be displayed.) 5. Right-mouse-click AND HOLD on the filename found in (4) above and drag it to a blank area on your desktop, release the right mouse button, and then, with the mouse, point to "Create shortcuts here" in the little list that is shown. Single-left-click on "Create shortcuts here". Now you have a shortcut to CD-Emigranten (2001). Double-click the shortcut to run the program! The shortcut can be copied or moved to anywhere you wish, including to the "Start" menu. I have found that CD-Emigranten (2001) runs perfectly under Win7 (x64) except that I can't view timetables for the vessels. But then, that didn't work under Win XP either! Perhaps I failed to copy a data file from the installation CD, or ??? Hope this helps someone - Mark Johnson Oconomowoc, Wisconsin Ysearch/Mitosearch 3VP37
