Hi Antoinette I found the following about the Swedish name Bror and thought it might interest you. "Bror is a Scandinavian masculine given name which simply means 'brother'. The name has been found as early as in runestones in the form Brodhir. The name form Bror is known since the year 1536. Bror used to be a name that was never given to the oldest son of a family. From the 19th century, the literal meaning of the name has not been as important and the name could be given to any son. Bror was a very common name in Sweden during the first decades of the 20th century. It has since been less common. It is also in fairly common use in Finland, Denmark and Norway". I have several men named Bror in my Swedish ancestors. Naomi in Illinois ---------------------------------------- Antoinette Waughtel Sorensen wrote Mon, 1 Oct 2012 10:05:59 A moment ago a message came through showing the above given name - I have an early ancestor with the name Bror (aka Broor, Broer which eventually became Brewer here in America) and was told it was not a name but did mean "brother". Since seeing this posted I thought I would give another try to finding info on my ancestor. He was shown as Sinnick Broer and/or as Broer Sinnick and this Sinnick has also been shown as Senecke and many variants. We were always told they came from Sweden but have found that he was actually from Finland and that his wife (name unknown) was most likely from Sweden. They came to America in 1654 on the Mercurius (sp). Is there any info available on either name in Sweden. I apologize for any incovenience this message may give the list but thought I would try once again. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Antoinette (Tacoma, Washington)
Thanks Naomi. The sons on this Sinnick Broer were Anders & Broor and they came with the mother/father & a sister to America, then they later had Jan. Of course there may have been more, possibly staying in the old country, but I believe the 3 sons & the one daughter, and she, we have never found a name for, but did find she had married a Falkenberg here. It has been a very interesting line to research and I was fortunate to compile it for publication in 2008. But always enjoy adding more as I find it. Thanks for replying.
