It varied between parishes and over time how many witnesses there were, and their status and relations to the parents. The most common was probably to have 4 witnesses, one married and one unmarried man, and one married and one unmarried woman, and the married man and woman were usually not a couple. But in some parishes it was common with married couples as witnesses... And in some parishes there were usually 2, or 3, or 6, or 8 witnesses... Sometimes the woman who carried the child at the baptism was recorded separately, sometimes not. // Bo Johansson
