I am trying to help someone with their immigrant ancestor. In America, he was known as B. Nels Holmquist and lived in Wisconsin. Census records give his birth as April 1860 and his immigration as 1882 or 1883. The family member says Nels changed his name for the Swedish military, but doesn't know his family name. Nels' marriage record (1887 Polk County, Wisconsin) lists his parents as Nels Olson and Anna Johnson. I have been unable to find a close match in the immigration records for B Nels Holmquist (or Holmqvist or Nilsson), so I tried the Central Soldiers registrar to see if I could find anything. I found this strong possibility: HOLMQVIST Bengt Family name: Nilsson Birth date: 18600418 Death date: - Enlisted: 1880 Discharged: 1882 File number: SS-06-0010-1880 Regiment: S. Sk. Infanteriregementet File: Ölycke Company: Färs Parish: Högseröd Croft Number: SS-06-0010 And there's where the Högseröd question comes in. I figured out Högseröd is in Malmöhus, but when I check for household examinations there's a big gap from 1844 to 1889, so I can't locate Bengt Holmqvist at the place he was serving. Does anyone know if the records simply don't exist anymore for that period or if they are combined with another parish? The other location clues the family member gave: He lived in Skåne and may have also lived in Alingsås, Sweden. Högseröd is in Skåne Alingsås is in Älvsborg Would appreciate any ideas! Joy K
I have replied to Joyce with more info but the person below's birth record can be found at Öved CI:5 (1836-1861) Image 232 / page 281 (AID: v114018.b232.s281, NAD: SE/LLA/13535) This seems to be a match with the record and below. (same birth date as the soldier, same parents as expected) -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of jkersteter via Sent: Wednesday, August 06, 2014 4:57 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [SWEDEN] Högseröd parish question I am trying to help someone with their immigrant ancestor.
