    3. Dear Joy, Well, I'll be! Still, I cannot imagine an 18 year old traveling half way around the world by himself. 3. My grandfather traveled from northern Norway to Quebec, then to Minnesota at age 16 all by himself. He had a brother and sister in Minnesota and his sister sent him the tickets, so he had a place to go. >From his farm home near Harstad to Trondheim to Hull, England, across England by train, then to another ship to Quebec and by however means to the southwestern part of Minnesota. It still amazes me, but it happened all the time in those days. A second Joy On 6/29/2014 12:48 AM, Lance L. 3. Dear Joy, It must be something that would possess a young man to travel all that distance, from friends and family to start a new life all by himself. Though I would think these days they would say he was ADD and medicate him. Yet thinking about it, back in the 1970s, when I was 17 I would hitchhike across U.S. and be back in time for school. Don't recommend it these days. My dad said I always had a restless spirit. Started going on hikes, on my own, since I was 4 years old. Boy, I use to get into such trouble. But I always found my way home. Now at 58 I have travelled all around the world and would like to travel more. My grandparents never left the States. Maybe I should have been medicated. Nah! Now back to my friend's Swedish heritage. What I would like to do for him is go back 3 generations, and see what he want to do after that. Hopefully, pay me my Mushroom Burger. But this is what I have thus far. Johannes OLAFSSON (s/o ?) born 13 Jul 1821 Lekasa, Skaraborgs, Sweden, married to Johanna SVENSDOTTER (d/o ?) 04 Oct 1825 Barne-Åsaka, Skaraborgs Sweden. Magnus JOHANSSON (s/o ?) born 02 Mar 1816 Tengene, Skaraborgs, Sweden, died 20 Mar 1877 Essunga, Skaraborgs, Sweden, married 23 Oct 1852 Ryda, Skaraborgs, Sweden to Kjerstin ANDERSDOTTER (d/o ?) born 08 Sep 1820 Magra, Älvsborgs, Sweden, died 19 Dec 1892 Essunga, Skaraborgs, Sweden. Let me know if I have anything wrong. Even younger people would emigrate alone, but then usually with someone from the same or neighboring parish traveling at the same time, or with someone on a visit from America. I don't see any more people emigrating at the same time in the Barne-Åsaka 1879 moving-out list in Barne-Åsaka B:1 (1870-1895) Image 43 / page 95 (AID: v9479.b43.s95, NAD: SE/GLA/13018). // Bo Johansson >> >> Johan Olaus Johannesson >> Ägarson >> b. 3/31/1861 in Barne-Åsaka, Skaraborgs län (Västergötland) >> Emigrated 3/28/1879 >> from Stora Svenstorp, Barne-Åsaka >> to Amerika >> Source: SVAR; Household Examination Roll, Vol Lekåsa AI:9, p 181
