I have received the marriage license for Ida Brutus and husband Carl Johnson, which provides some additional information for him. Unfortunately, his parents' names were not given. Nor were they listed on his death certificate. **** Marriage License **** Name: Charles Ellis Johnson Birth: 9 January 1861 Sweden Signed: Carl Elis Johanson ** ** I thought it was important to call this out since his signature -- and his wife's signature -- both vary in spelling from what was written on the documentation. Her middle name was spelled "Josephina" but she signed it "Josefina." **** Other American documents show alternate information **** Carl Ernest Johnson (his son also had this name) Carl E Johnson DOB: 09 Jan 1862 I appreciate any tips you might have! Her middle name was spelled "Josephina" but she signed it > "Josefina." --- There was no standardised spelling, so spelling variations were normal, it varied with the whim of the writer. Perhaps his name was Karl Elias in Sweden? > > **** Other American documents show alternate information **** > Carl Ernest Johnson (his son also had this name) > Carl E Johnson > DOB: 09 Jan 1862 --- I see no suitable Karl/Carl E* Jo* born 1861-01-09 or 1862-01-09 in the EMIBAS database. So perhaps some of your information is wrong, or he left without giving proper notice. Swedish Census 1880 has 4 Kar/Carl Elias born 1861-1862, but 3 of them are still in Sweden in Swedish Census 1890. The 4th was Karl Elias Wessman, born 1861-08-23 Boge (Gotland county). He lived in Stockholm 1881 and became a missing person that year. But doesn't look like a good fit... But perhaps his name was Karl Elof, or Karl Ernst, or something... Or even Karl Eliasson, son of Elias Johansson, or something similar. // Bo Johansson
