    1. [SWEDEN] Translation / Context Requested - Household Clerical Surveys
    2. Debbie via
    3. I found the record below on Ancestry in their collection titled "Sweden, Selected Indexed Household Clerical Surveys, 1880-1893." The content in the [brackets] is content I added as part of my effort to translate and make sense of the record. I have a few lingering questions that perhaps one of you can assist me with. 1. With a year range of 1881 - 1890, does this basically equate to a "census" for 1890? I assume it was conducted in 1890? 2. The residence is recorded as"Vimmerby stadsförsamling, Kalmar, Sverige." A translation seemed to suggest that this means Vimmerby city church?? [stadsförsamling = city church] Were they living in a church??? 3. Village, farm or craft - what do they mean by " Östra Kvarteret " [east block]? 4. Moved to: Höghult -- I googled this and there seem to be an awful lot of places in Sweden that use this term. Is it safe to assume that this is Höghult in Kalmar County, Sweden Name: Didrika Maria Brutus Relationship or Occupation: Hyresgäst Enkan [tenant widow] Birth Date: 3 jul 1824 Birth Place: Tuna, Sverige (Sverige = Sweden) Year Range: 1881 - 1890 Residence : Vimmerby stadsförsamling, Kalmar, Sverige (Sweden) [stadsförsamling = city church] Village, Farm, or Croft: Fredriksberg, Östra Kvarteret [Östra Kvarteret = east block] Moved Out of Parish: 1888 Moved To: Höghult GID Number: 183.5.51500 Household Members: Didrika Maria Brutus (Head) Hulda Gustafva Dotter (Daughter) Ida Josefina Dotter (Daughter) Thanks in advance! I assume it was conducted in 1890? --- No it was kept continuously during that time, at the start of the period people were copied to a page from the same location (not necessarily the same page number) in the previous volume, and then added to a page when they were born or moved in, and were crossed out when they died or moved out. The Swedish census 1890 was an extract from the household records, done at the end of 1890. That is there were no "census takers" going from house to house and recording people. > > 2. The residence is recorded as"Vimmerby stadsförsamling, Kalmar, > Sverige." A translation seemed to suggest that this means Vimmerby > city church?? [stadsförsamling = city church] Were they living in a > church??? --- No, city parish. Vimmerby had both a city parish (stadsförsamling) for the city itself, and a rural parish (landsförsamling) for the area surrounding the city. > > 3. Village, farm or craft - what do they mean by " Östra Kvarteret " > [east block]? --- "Kvarter" can have several different meanings, it can mean block, but in this case one quarter section of the city. > > 4. Moved to: Höghult -- I googled this and there seem to be an awful > lot of places in Sweden that use this term. Is it safe to assume that > this is Höghult in Kalmar County, Sweden --- There actually is (or was) a place called Höghult in the city parish, found in Vimmerby stadsförsamling AI:16 (1881-1890) Image 397 / page 389 (AID: v24390.b397.s389, NAD: SE/VALA/00419). > > Name: Didrika Maria Brutus > Relationship or Occupation: Hyresgäst Enkan [tenant widow] > Birth Date: 3 jul 1824 > Birth Place: Tuna, Sverige (Sverige = Sweden) > Year Range: 1881 - 1890 > Residence : Vimmerby stadsförsamling, Kalmar, Sverige (Sweden) > [stadsförsamling = city church] > > Village, Farm, or Croft: Fredriksberg, Östra Kvarteret [Östra > Kvarteret = east block] > Moved Out of Parish: 1888 > Moved To: Höghult > GID Number: 183.5.51500 > Household Members: > Didrika Maria Brutus (Head) > Hulda Gustafva Dotter (Daughter) > Ida Josefina Dotter (Daughter) --- Since this was a city, there usually were no "Village, Farm, or Croft". They didn't actually move out of the parish, Höghult is in Vimmerby stadsförsamling. // Bo Johansson
