    3. Hi All I am trying to help someone trace their Swedish ancestor who migrated to Australia. His birthplace was recorded as "Batocanes" on his naturalization certificate and as "Vadcarness" on his (English) seaman's discharge papers. I have been unable to find a good candidate for the correct placename. Would anyone with a better grasp of Swedish placenames be able to suggest any likely places ? Regards John Killip

    3. I told my friend I would ask the Swedish Roots Listers to look at this problem as they are both knowledgeable and among the best of the genealogy researchers. Thanks, Sharon and Lois for your kind help. I had to laugh when I read Sharon's comment, "there are lots of Swedes in Minnesota." Yep, I was one of them! I hope someone who has access will check Canadian records even though Lois may have figured out my dilemma. And, I'll do more work on military records. Thank you so much and Happy New Year, Yvonne

    3. When responding to a query on the list, please do not change the subject line. All messages are archived and in the future someone who read the original query and wanted to follow the string would miss your post because you have created a separate string. This will also create a split for any responses to your message. Lois Casson List Admin. On 12/29/2015 4:08 PM, Sharon Green via wrote: > this entry on the Find a Grave Index could be your guy. 3. Thanks, Judy. I had tried to determine where they were married before asking for a check of census recs. Her maiden name was Karlsson and her family moved four times by 1914. And, places of death revealed nothing...far removed from places of birth. I am using SVAR to check for marriage recs, no luck so far. I only made a connection by search death CD for an Öman with a marital status change on Bror's death date. I have tried to track her but have lost her in a 1914 family move to Helgesta. 3. Hi Carol, I don't know about the Scandinavians but they did have allotments. It was a way to assimilate immigrants with jobs a; housing etc and not have an avalanche of immigrants that we couldn't handle. The immigrants also had sponsors here who vowed to see that the new arrivals had a job and was able to take care of themselves or the sponsor's job was to provide for them. They also had to pass health requirements. They tried to allow a mixture of ethnic immigrants - not sure on what the number was based on. ALl the best Merry Christmas.:} Barbara in MA ----- Original Message ----- From: "Carol Whitley Larson via" <sweden@rootsweb.com> To: sweden@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, December 17, 2015 3:22:22 PM Subject: [SWEDEN] Immigration allotments We were having where did you come from discussion. 3. So how many Swedes might have been allowed to immigrate in 1856, for example. That is when my 2nd great grandparents immigrated to Galesburg IL. I wonder if the Swensen Swedish Immigration Center at Augustana College in Rock Island, IL might have some information on this issue.........
