My great grandmother had three brothers who emigrated to the States: Nils, Peder and Jonas. They were all born in Alsen, Jämtland, Sweden by parents Erik Jonsson (Hamberg) and Karen Olofsdotter/Olsdotter. They moved to Norway where the took the name Hamberg. My great grandmother, Emma Hamberg, was born in Norway, and the brothers emigrated from Norway. One brother Olof stayed behind in Sweden with his aunt and uncle, he was handicapped. Jonas Eriksson Hamberg was born 30. Aug 1863. He emigrated to Oconto, Wisconsin in 1889 from Trondheim, Norway. http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/gen/vis/8/pe00000000099780 (There is a Jonas Hamberg in Oconto, Wisconsin, but I believe that is a different Jonas, who is born in 1868/69, and I think this Jonas has a brother named Carl.) There is also a Jons Hamberg who emigrates to Quebec, Canada 23 June 1887 on the ship Montreal, but I don't know if this is him. Nils Eriksson Hamberg was born 09. May 1866. He emigrated in 1891 to Fisher Polk, Minnesota. http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/gen/vis/8/pe00000000108390 He travels again in 1893, this time to Winnipeg, Manitoba. He is listed as not married and living in America. http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/gen/vis/8/pe00000000117403 The last time he travels is in 1915. He has been visiting his Family in Norway from June 1914 to February 2015. He is a farmer, not married. He might have died in Norway in 1925. The third brother Peder Eriksson Hamberg was born 07. Oct 1871. He emigrated in 1902 from Trondheim. http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/gen/vis/8/pe00000000144764 http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/kb/uf/person/pu00000000110926 He died in Rutland, Vermont 23. June 1954. His parents are listed, and a Mrs Peter J Hamberg. I have been trying to find the right Peter/Peder Hamberg, but I am not sure if I am able to find him. I hope someone could give me a helping hand with this one. When I think I might have found the right persons, I have to start all over again. I would be much Grateful for any kind of guidelines! Best regards from Hanne, Hanssen, Namdalseid, Norway

Håkan Andersson has only one entry in the EMIBAS database: Andersson, Håkan Gosse [boy] (unmarried man) b. 9 Apr 1840 in Färlöv, Kristianstads län (Skåne) Emigrated 18 Jun 1855 from Sandskiftshusen, Färlöv, Kristianstads län (Skåne) to Danmark Source: Household Examination Roll, p. 267 ------------------------------- And he is not in EMIBAS with a different surname. In 1855 two 15 year-old boys emigrated from Färlöv, Kristianstads län, Sweden, to Denmark (no place name or parish given). They were Nils Olsson and Håkan Andersson. Where they went to in Denmark, and how long they stayed together I don't know. I believe Nils emigrated to Australia, and subsequently to New Zealand. The Danish 1860 Census is about 92% transcribed, and I have searched it for Håkan. I think the name is probably quite rare. The Census has two people of this name: Håkon Andersen, aged 26, married (1857), born Sweden Håkon Anderson, aged 32, unmarried, born Sweden. (The census has 11 other people named Hakon or Håkon born in Sweden, none of the right patronymn or age). Of course the person I'm looking for might be in the 8% of the census that has not been transcribed, or he could have died between 1855 and 1860. But I wonder if he returned to Sweden. In which case I wonder if the Emibas database might have a record of him. I'd be grateful if someone could check this for me please? Thanks. Kevin

Sorry to have taken a while to get back. This what I have My Swedish ancestor is my great grandfather August Kandlin, born 17/6/1878 in Sweden & died 6/9/1946 in Hawthorn. His marriage certificate of 25/4/1912 state he is a carpenter whose parents were Ernest Kandlin (captain) & Marie Morist. August was a seaman (AB). I have his documents from the Shipping Federation Limited (address Glasgow) & Federated Seamen's Union of Australasia. I have his certificate of Naturalisation ( am awaiting his application to come) where the particulars state he was born in Batocanes, Sweden. His seaman's Certificate of Discharge Book states that his place of birth was Vadcarness, Sweden. A bit confusing. My problem is that there are no Kandlin persons in any Folkräkning, or indexed in Familysearch. I have tried variations like Kandelin, Kan*, Can*, *andlin, *andelin and more but not found any good candidates. My next try was August without a surname born 1878 in the 1880 Folkräkning, but there are thousands (as one would expect) so I need a location ! Diane, I have benefited from the assistance of this Sweden email list many times. I usually read the posts just to learn more about research on Swedes. All of my Swedish ancestors ended up in Moline, IL. so that line caught my attention. Here are things I found on Ancestry.com. searching under her married name. Anna Albertina Anderson filed a "passport application" on March 15, 1920. She states she was born in Sweden on March 29, 1887. On the 2nd page you will find a picture of herself and her 2 daughters that apparently returned to Sweden to visit. They were Margit, born May 1, 1915 and Lina born Dec 14, 1917. They were boarding the Stockholm on May 1, 1920. And she is found in the 1940 U.S. Census in Moline, IL. under the name Albertina A Anderson, age 53, along with her husband Carl C Anderson, age 54, daughter Margit V Anderson, age 24 and daughter Linnea M Anderson, age 22. Also, I have copied this link that most probably is the gravestone of your ancestor and her husband. It shows her death November 25, 1973. Her husband died in 1964. http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=35768939&ref=acom I hope this is helpful. There is also in Census 1880 no August born 1878 living with a father named Ernst, or with a mother named Mar* Mo*. So I suspect some of your information is in error. My name is Diane and I am new to this list. I am looking for information on my grandfather's family. All dates and places are written as I found them on notes written by my grandfather and his mother. His father was Johan Severin (Örn) Ohrn. He was born in Alnö, Medelpad, Sundsval in 1891. He immigrated to the US in 1910 and married Esther Emelia Nylander in 1913 in Moline, IL. His brother Nyort (born 1894) was killed in WWI and is buried in France. His brother Anders Patrus (born 1889) was lost at sea. Two different family notes give 2 different dates. One say lost 2 sept 1914 syda afrika and the other says lost Cape Town, South Africa 1917. (I tried checking ship wrecks but am totally lost on how to find info on his death). His sister Anna Albertina (born 1887) was in the US in 1913 and I believe she stayed in Moline, IL and married Carl Anderson. He had twin sisters Gerta and Göta born 1897 . Gerta died at 7 months old. Gota is the only sibling whose surname was written Petterson. Everyone else was Örn or Ohrn. I was able to find christening records for all siblings but Anders Patrus. Their father was Petter Anderson Örn. One set of notes says born 25 March 1850 in Strand, Alnö, Varmland and died 23 May 1927 in Doleland Åminskog. I am also searching for the Nylander family, but I will write about them in a separate post. I would appreciate any advice on where to look for records, or even what types of records are available. Thank you, Diane
Happy New Year to the list. I posted this request for help on some "living" relatives but I didn't get a reply. So I decided it was time to do some further searching. I have found two of the three children and if I go a little deeper I should find the missing daughter. I went to my local Library website and they have a link to "America's Obituaries & Death Notices". I found obituaries for both sons. William died in 2002 in Allentown, PA and Carl died in 2015 in Minnesota. Carl's obituary gave the names of his children (including married names of the daughters) and I was able to find one of the daughters through White Pages. I called her and had a lovely conversation. I just wanted to say thank you to the list for all the support you give through the year and to share my success as a reminder that there are many resources out there when think outside the box. So Happy New Year and great searching in 2016. Carol in Kentucky -----Original Message----- From: Carol Whitley Larson <larsonjw@aol.com> To: sweden <sweden@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wed, Dec 30, 2015 9:20 pm Subject: Julia Maria Jaensson Becker I am tracking the children of Emma Charlotta Jonasdotter (from an earlier post) and with the help of Bo I learned that one of her daughters came to the US, settled in Brooklyn, New York, and married Charles Becker who was born in Denmark. Julia Maria was born 1883 (25 December)in Ryssby. Kalmar. Her husband was Charles Leopold Christin Becker and he was born March 14, 1883 in Denmark, according to his World War I Draft Registration Card. (She is listed as Mary his wife at this time.) I have found them on the 1920, 1930 and 1940 US Censuses. And they have three children, Helen born about 1915, Allen born about 1921, and William born about 1923. By 1940 the son, Allen is listed as Carl A Becker. After the 1940 US Census the trail seems to grow cold. (Although Julia Marie travels back to Sweden in 1946.) Can anyone help me find some leads on what happens to this family? Thanks so much and Happy New Year. Carol in Kentucky
