My 3rd gr. grandfather was Gadi Cook, whose father was born in S.C. in 1747, so they had been in this country for some time. I have found that the name was used primarily, if not exclusively by early families from the Pee Dee River region of South Carolina, and they all seem to have a relationship or connection to Gideon Gibson from Virginia who also lived on the Pee Dee. My Gadi Cook may be related to the Cooks and Campbells who later moved from S.C. back up into N.C., probably into the Robeson County area. The legends of my Cook line are very intriguing, in that they say our ancestor was a gypsy and someone in the family was Portuguese (or Spanish) and that the latter occurred due to pirates or piracy off the coast of S.C. I am very interested in verifying the pronunciation of the name (how your ancestors pronounced it), if any with the name Gadi came from South Carolina, and their physical appearance.
