Rosegardner, Thank you for this posting. Even though newspapers is error this is still very helpful information. We are trying to determine if the Indian woman who married into the Sweatt family was the wife of Aaron Sweatt or his father Benjamin Sweatt. May be both men married Indian women. A P Sweatt should be Aaron John Sweatt and Charles P Sweatt, are my gggrandfather and ggrandfather respectively. There is a story that the Peaveys adopted an Indian girl. Haven't proved this yet. We have traced our line back to Robert Sweatt born 1623 in Olde Town Manor, Modbury, Dovenshire, England, died Elizabeth City Va. He came here on the Guiding Star, in 1638 and was indentured servant to Lt. Robert Sheppard. Robert Sweatt was the oldest son of John and Sarah Laramy Sweatt. This information has been documented. The Sweatts in Marlboro County descend from Robert Sweatt and Margaret Cornish. Margaret Cornish was an indentured servant of Lt. Robert Sheppard and was from Africa. In early census the Sweatts are listed a mulatto. They may have said that they were French because of peoples attitude about race in 1907. All the names listed in the article are Marlboro County names. Again thank you for the post, and please if you come across any more information please post it. I am glad to have the information that I ancestors were well thought of. Some of my line went to Alabama in the early 1900s. Patsy In a message dated 1/8/2010 7:17:00 P.M. Their foreparents on father's side from France, on mother's from old Holland. The late A P SWEATT, father of Chas P SWEATT married a lady whose mother was of Indian Blood.
