Hello Sweat Mailing List Subscribers. I wanted to let you know a little about this list. We have 33 subscribers in regular mail mode and 25 subscribers in digest mode. Messages posted to the list are currently limited to 20K. If you feel this should be set higher let me know. If I receive 4 bounces from your email address (in succession) you will automatically be unsubscribed. I could set this as low as 3 and as high as 16. This list is not moderated. I feel no need for it to be so. All posts to the Sweat Message Board are automatically posted to the mailing list. Digests are scheduled to be sent every 48 hours or 20K in size (whichever comes first). If anyone has any comments or suggestions, you may reach me in private as indicated below. If you reply to this message it will be posted to the mailing list. Also if you've noticed there is a Links & Announcements link on the Message Board. If anyone knows of any links to any resources on the internet concerning the Sweat surname, submit them to me and I will post them there. I hope to meet each of you in our research for the Sweat Family Tree. Good Luck Everyone and Keep Diggin!!! Kettle Creek is on the western edge of Waycross on the way to Baptist Village (there are signs to Baptist Village). I think it's on highway US 82 or 84. Shiloh Cemetary is about 1 mile east of the Pierce County Courthouse, off of the highway to Patterson. Further down the same highway, you will see a sign to High Bluff Cemetary. Emmaus Cemetery, between St Goerige and Folkston, Georgia, in Charlton County, also has some Sweats. -----Original Message----- From: l m [mailto:laurae_1998@yahoo.com] Sent: Wednesday, April 24, 2002 9:18 PM To: SWEAT-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [SWEAT] Cemeteries in Blackshear or Ware County Georgia Jeeze Cynthia. Wish I could get around as fast as you do! What's your home base? In Waycross, there are Sweats in the Kettle Creek Cemetery. It's a big one sort of in town. Don't have directions but you can ask anybody once you get there. There are also some very old Sweat headstones in the Beulah Baptist Church cemetery at the forks of the "herricane" creeks - out toward Alma. James Quarterman, Four Acre, and quite a few more Sweats are buried there. It's a really neat place. I think you might find directions in a Google search. You can find Sweats in "the Kirkland" cemetery but I'm not sure where that is in Pierce County. Hope this helps some. Pam, Since you did not find your grandmother on the Dawes Rolls may I suggest that maybe your grandmother was Catawba. At one time the Catawba Indians lived between the Cherokee and the Europeans. Later most folk who have Indian ancestory and are from S C will name Cherokee as the tribe. I donot know why but everyone seens to forget about about the Catawba. You may want to check out the Catawbas, this may be where you will find her. Patsy

There are tons of Cemeteries in Atlanta. Eastview, where a lot of mine are buried, no longer has an office on the premises. Then there's Oakland and of course a lot of smaller ones 1-10 acres. I'm hoping to start indexing some of them with photos. I'm just trying to figure out how to go about it with minimual expense. I've looked for your names at the Sweat locations I've been to, but no luck so far. Easter is not a very common name and being the name it is would grab anyone's attention. Will keep looking as I'm not done with mine either. HI ALL SWEAT RESEARCHERS, Having noticed some of the questions I thought I give what I do know of the Sweats. I am descended of the ALLEN SWEAT/SWETT-NANCY EVANS line of McNairy Tenn which traces back to William Sweat & Sarah (Turner or Kilbourun) according to what some say. Mine goes back to an early Robert Sweat. Many of the sweats may be connected the the SWEET/SWEETE/SWETT/SWEAT of DEVONSHIRE in SW ENGLAND. Ther is even a TRAYNE/TRAINE MANOR HOUSE which was of the SWEET family. You can enjoy many hours looking online at the GENUKI - ENGLAND- DEVONSHORE COUNTY RECORDS. OR thru GENFORUM -DEVONSHIRE-. *The Sweat are listed among Melungeon families as there was apparently much mixed-racial heritage among the Sweat. *They are also on Paul Heinigg's list of Free Persons of Color. I found some of my line mentioned there. *My Allen sweat had lived as a child on the Scott Plantation on or near the Roanoke River. ***NOTE: If any has any info on this Plantation, please let me know! *In early Virginia Colonial records (online) I found articles noting the Sweats among families interracially mixed with Indian Tribes of that early area. *Col Robert Sweat of Tenn wrote a small book on the Allen Sweat line. *There is another Book by "WISE" on the SWEATS OF THE SOUTH. (I think this is correct) **If anyone can connect with my Sarah or William, I love to know. I have not been able to get Col. Sweat's book yeat as they had sold out. Joseph Thomas Johnson believed to be Swedish b. 1872 in Lawrenceville, Gwinnett county, Ga d. 1/17/1955 in Fulton County, Ga (Atlanta) They had 13 children, I believe all were born in Atlanta, Ga. Dad was the youngest: Carroll Bradford Johnson, the others, that I can remember were: Howard, Dan, Katie, Dolly, and Sue. Dan and his wife Mildred had one child, Phillip. Katie was married to Grover Cleveland and had 4 children, Pascal, Charlotte, Mac, and Sandy. Dad said that a lot of his brothers and sisters died at an early age. And I know that grandma gave birth to several sets of twins. I also know that Carroll, Dolly, and Sue spent time in prison, not sure of where, though I would assume in Georgia. I have been through cenus' for the years that Joseph and Easter, my grandparents, were born and for several years afterwards, and cannot find them. If you could go to the federal and state archives there in Georgia and see what you can find, I would greatly appreciate it. You may email me personally, co44ee@hotmail.com Thanks, Pam
Just wanted to let you know I went to Waycross yesterday. What a drive. 4.5 hours down and 4.5 hours back. Visited Kettle Creek. What a cemetery!!!! Luckily my daughter had a special day at school. (go to work with a parent day). My mother, me and my daughter combed this whole cemetery. Talk about hot!!! but we got it done. The old part next to the church had to be done on foot but the other part across the road we were able to drive through. We found a lot of the SWEATS (southern line) We noticed some other names that were in abundance: STRICKLAND, BENNETT, BLITCH, FUTCH there were a couple of more that I'm trying to remember. Will send more names as I talk to my mother and add to this list of names at Kettle Creek. These are old families from that area. Took some pics of the SWEATS but I plan on making another trip soon but will be taking a Video Camera and having the film digitized to a CD so I can extract still shots of headstones. On the way back we almost jumped at every cemetery we saw....lol This is becoming very addictive I wanted to take a picture of every headstone I saw. Once I have a video camera and/or digital camera I plan on doing just that. We (mother and I) are going again but this time the trip will last for several days and plan on visiting some libraries, historical societies and of course some more cemeteries. We may even go bug the town clerks.....lol Will send the list an agenda of our next PLANNED trip and then let you know what we find to help the next person that goes down there to find additional info instead of repeating the same research over and over. Will let you know when the film is ready!!!!!
