Author: ajhflorida Surnames: Swartwood - Howe Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.swartwood/167/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I'm looking to find a James Swartwood born abt 1833 in New York Family conections - On June 3,1880 from the Federal Census was living in Wysox,Bradford ,Pennsylvania with his wife Lousia Howe - Swartwood born 1860 in Wysox,Bradford,Pennsylvania and their son John Swartwood born Sept 1879 in Wysox,Bradford,Pa. They were living with Lousia's family Jonathan & Elvira(Martin) Howe as well as some o Lousia's other siblings . Later in May 27,1905 I did find a Newspaper artical about John Swartwood as follows - John Swartwood Wore Stolen Property Back to Florist LaFrance's WAS CALLING ON THE MAID Unexpected Entrance of Mr. LaFrance in the Kitchen Resulted in Accusation, the Man Running-- Brought Hat Back and Was Caught T. W. L a F r a n c e .the florist, was more t h a n surprised when he walked out I n t o the kitchen of his house earlylast evening- and found a man who had on his black coat and his derby h a t near "sparking" the maid. The h a t and coat had been missing since last S a t u r d a y night and a s soon as Mr.La France saw his property he a t once confronted the stranger with the fact t h a t he w a s wearing another person's raiment. The caller assumed an Indignant air a n d stated In positive tones that he p u r c h a s e d the coat in. .Waverly.- Mr. L a F r a n c e was not to be so easily misled, however, and seizing hold of the coat said that he would have to hold the caller until the arrival of a policeman. The man with Mr. L a F r a n c e 's coat on lost no time at this in getting out of t h e coat and bolting out of t he r e a r door of t h e house In his shirt sleeves. He managed to get away with t h e derby, however. Mr. LaFrance upon examining t he coat and making sure that it was his property, notified the police of t h e affair and they were given a description of the man wanted. In t h e meantime the stranger was up against a hard proposition. His..lack .of a coat made him an easy, person to find, and,' knowing this, he sent word to his friend in the kitchen to loan him a small sum that might get him out of town. He did not get the loan and to square himself with the man of the house he stealthily went back and placed the derby hat on the back porch . The stranger was just getting away a f t e r doing this charitable act when Officer Watts met him and took him i n to custody. At t h e police station he gave the name of J o h n Swartwood and said he lived in Sayre, Pa, This mornig Swartwood was arraigned before the recorder and asked .to plead to a charge of petit* larceny. He said his a g e is twenty-five and t h a t he has been employed off and on in tending bar at a saloon near the Lehigh Valley station . Swartwood sometimes goes, by the name of Bartleson. His appearance w a s rather funny this morning, for he was clad in a very thin , a n d short linen coat, picked up somewhere. The man a d m i t t e d his guilt, saying that while calling on the hired girl S a t u r d a y night he was so full that he took. the good coat by mistake. He said that he meant to do right, and tried to m a k e the' recorder believe that he brought back t h e derby hat before being caught with t h e coat on. Recorder Bogart remanded the man for sentence and will look him up.- He will receive a stiff term in the County Jail if his record is not an overly good one. ------------------------------------------------------------ No mention of either of his parents whereabouts but later Lousia is listed in her brothers obituary as ( Mrs. Lulu Hope )of Elmira in The Binghamton Press dated Saturday Evening August 30,1919 , But I find NO trace of her nor husband James Swartood or their son John Swartwood .. Any help would be great Thanks Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
