Greetings to SWARTWOOD researchers - how many of us are there? I will introduce myself. I am descended from Elizabeth Swartwood who married John Adam Shafer. Elizabeth was the daughter of Thomas Swartwood and Elizabeth Ennes. I would like to know a lot more about Thomas's life, and more about his children, who they married, where they lived, and their children. There seems to be some confusion about the parents of Thomas Swartwood. Apparently there were two Bernardus Swartwouts who each had a son Thomas. The two Bernardus Swartwouts were uncle and nephew to each other. The older Bernardus was married to Rachel SCHEPMOES, and their son Thomas was baptized on 27 December 1713 in the Kingston (N.Y.) Reformed Dutch Church. The parents were listed as "Barnardus Zwartwoud, Rachel Schepmoes." The witnesses and sponsors were Barent Wagening [I do not know who he was}, Jacobus Swartwoud, and Hendrikjen Swartwout. The last two were brother and sister of this Bernardus, and all 3 of these siblings were children of Roelof Swartwout and Eva Albertse BRADT. (Is this correct so far?) I know nothing more about the above Thomas, whether he married or died young or what. The other Bernardus, the one who married Margriet ("Grietje") DECKER was the nephew of the above Bernardus, being the son of Antoni Swartwout. This younger Bernardus seems to have had a son Thomas born about 1730, who married Elizabeth Ennes. She, Elizabeth, was baptized 24 August 1735, and they were married on 4 June 1754 at the Walpack Reformed Dutch Church in Sussex County, New Jersey. Their children that I am pretty sure about were: Bernardus, named after Thomas's father; Alexander (two of them, the first one must have died in infancy) named after Elizabeth Ennes's father; Joseph - don't know who his namesake was; Elizabeth, named for the mother; and Maria - Thomas Swartwood had a younger sister named Maria and there were other Marias among the Swartwouts. Were there other children of this marriage of Thomas Swartwood and Elizabeth Ennes? Does anyone have wills or probate files for the two Bernardus Swartwouts that name their heirs? I hope other SWARTWOOD-L subscribers will introduce themselves as well. Barbara Hill <bhill@uclink4.berkeley.edu>
