    1. SWARTWOOD Family Photographs

    3. I've "rescued" two old photographs, one identified as Ella E. JAYNES of Cayuta, New York. The photograph was taken at the Theo W. Ryding Studio in Newfield, NY and is dated November 17, 1889 with Ella appearing to be in her teens or early 20's at the time it was taken. Based on limited research I believe this may be a photograph of Ella JAYNES b. 1866 daughter of David & Sarah JAYNES who along with their children Duff, Minnie, and Ella were living in Cayuta, NY during the 1880 census. The entire JAYNES family was recorded as having been born in NY State. I believe that Ella later married Dorr Monroe SWARTWOOD on the 16th of June 1892 in Elmira, NY. The second photograph is of an unidentified young female, taken at the Rundell Studio in Sherburne, NY. The subject appears to be in her teens or early 20's at the time. The photographs were recovered from the same source but I've no idea if the two young women are related. I'm hoping to see the photographs returned to family. If you are a member of this family or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

    3. Does anyone know who these people are? 1865 TIOGA Co., NY MARRIAGE: Mrs. Catherine SWARTWOOD married William MAYO. Could be she was a widow or divorced. Can anyone identify her as a widow Swartwood in this area of New York? The only Catherine I can come up with is Catherine WILLIAMS who married Benjamin SWARTWOOD. -- Helen Graves

    3. Although I'm not a Swartwood. I am a Swartwout Researcher. And this list will prove most valuable to myself and Robert Swartwood, and a zillion out Swartwood researchers out there. Perhaps we should announce our new list to the DutchColonies list. Kathy kathyhoeldke@sympatico.ca

    3. Greetings to SWARTWOOD researchers - how many of us are there? I will introduce myself. I am descended from Elizabeth Swartwood who married John Adam Shafer. Elizabeth was the daughter of Thomas Swartwood and Elizabeth Ennes. I would like to know a lot more about Thomas's life, and more about his children, who they married, where they lived, and their children. There seems to be some confusion about the parents of Thomas Swartwood. Apparently there were two Bernardus Swartwouts who each had a son Thomas. The two Bernardus Swartwouts were uncle and nephew to each other. The older Bernardus was married to Rachel SCHEPMOES, and their son Thomas was baptized on 27 December 1713 in the Kingston (N.Y.) Reformed Dutch Church. The parents were listed as "Barnardus Zwartwoud, Rachel Schepmoes." The witnesses and sponsors were Barent Wagening [I do not know who he was}, Jacobus Swartwoud, and Hendrikjen Swartwout. The last two were brother and sister of this Bernardus, and all 3 of these siblings were children of Roelof Swartwout and Eva Albertse BRADT. (Is this correct so far?) I know nothing more about the above Thomas, whether he married or died young or what. The other Bernardus, the one who married Margriet ("Grietje") DECKER was the nephew of the above Bernardus, being the son of Antoni Swartwout. This younger Bernardus seems to have had a son Thomas born about 1730, who married Elizabeth Ennes. She, Elizabeth, was baptized 24 August 1735, and they were married on 4 June 1754 at the Walpack Reformed Dutch Church in Sussex County, New Jersey. Their children that I am pretty sure about were: Bernardus, named after Thomas's father; Alexander (two of them, the first one must have died in infancy) named after Elizabeth Ennes's father; Joseph - don't know who his namesake was; Elizabeth, named for the mother; and Maria - Thomas Swartwood had a younger sister named Maria and there were other Marias among the Swartwouts. Were there other children of this marriage of Thomas Swartwood and Elizabeth Ennes? Does anyone have wills or probate files for the two Bernardus Swartwouts that name their heirs? I hope other SWARTWOOD-L subscribers will introduce themselves as well. Barbara Hill <bhill@uclink4.berkeley.edu>

    3. Hello Swartwood researchers, I'm new at this and have never been on a list before so do not know exactly what to expect. I am hoping that this might solve the dilemma that I find myself in regarding my researches of the Swartwout family. My family joins the Swartwout line with: Orrin Pratt b. 1812, PA / Susan Chesley b. 1832 PA > Elisabeth Shafer b. 1790, PA / Simon Chesley b. 1764, NY >John Adam Shafer b. 1754, NJ / Elisabeth Swartwood b. 1768 , PA > Thomas Swartwood b. When I look on the internet for direction, I find that some researchers go back through Bernardus Swartwout and Margaret Decker while others say Bernardus Swartwout and Rachael Schepmoes. Because of these discrepancies, I have contacted individual researchers. One who favors Decker is attempting to compile evidence yet I have not heard anything definitive as the proving is evidently a very time consuming effort.. Another says she will see, but I have heard nothing further. Is there a researcher within the family who already has the proofs in place that can help me on this issue? Thanks in advance for the time and the effort.
