    3. I have a copy of "The Swartwood Sojourn II, 1575-2001" by Robert E. Swartwood, which has some pertinent information on this family. On page 85, it says: "Zura (Zuriah) Swartwood, son of Alexander Swartwout and Elizabeth Stickler, was born 30 May 1821 at Exeter, Luzerne, Pa, and about 1848 at Pa, married Elizabeth" [last name unknown] "who was born 23 May 1821. Zura (Zuriah) died on 7 Mar 1886 at Swartwood Bend, Wyo, Pa and was buried at Forest Hill, Cem. Elizabeth died on 22 Mar 1887 at Wyo, Pa and was buried at Forest Hill, Cem." Children listed for this couple: Matilda Swartwood, b. 3 Jun 1849, d. 5 Sept 1851 Vanamburg Swartwood, b. 24 Aug 1850, d. 25 Aug 1851 Elizabeth Swartwood, b. 10 Mar 1857, d. 20 Mar 1858 Abigail Swartwood, b. 1861 Hannah Swartwood, b. c1854 All he has on any descendants is a note that Hannah married somebody named Taylor. Going back one more generation, the book says: "Alexander Swartwout, son of Alexander Swartwout and Catharine Schoonmaker, was born 18 Apr 1794 at Exeter, Luz., Pa. and about 1819, married Elizabeth Stickler who was born 30 October 1801. Alexander died on 8 Dec 1877 at Exeter, Luz., Pa and was buried at Forest Hill, Cem. Elizabeth died on 10 Aug 1886 at Exeter, Wy., Pa and was buried at Forest Hill, Cem." The author lists 10 children for this couple, of which Zura (Zuriah) was the second oldest and the second son. Everything above between quotation marks is a direct quote from the book. This book lacks any sources so I can't vouch for the information and you should seek as many records as you can find in order to verify the line. In the process, you may also discover the maiden name of Zura's wife. He was a sailor during WWII and listed his hometown as Flint, Michigan. He also entered service from MI. He was aboard the sub the USS Grunion when she disappeared on it's maiden voyage in the Aleutians. It was last heard from in July 1942. the families weren't notified for about 2 months (for my own ancestor on the sub it came out in the papers on Sept 30 and Oct 1, 1942). Apparently they weren't declared dead until Aug 2, 1943. 70 men died on the submarine and nothing was ever known of it's possible fate until recently. Now a search will soon be underway to find it by the sons of the commander. I heard from them 2 weeks ago and have joined the search underway to see if I can find others related to the sailors who died as I think it is exciting! I would also appreciate any leads on relatives of this man.

    3. Kaye, After sending off the email about Mary Swartwood marrying c. 1799-1800 Isaac Shoemaker, Jr., I grabbed my book, "Swartwood Sojourn 1575-1997" and looked for Elizabeth Brink and found this: p. 353 Alexander Swartwout, son of Thomas Swartwout and Elizabeth ENNIS, was b 14 May 1764 in Walpack, Sussex Co NJ. About 1783 in Exeter, Luzerne Co., PA (that's the Wyoming Valley) he married Catherine SCHOONMAKER, daughter of Isaac SHOEMAKER and Elizabeth BRINK. I am not a Shoemaker or Schoonmaker researcher. Are these names used inter-changably? Catherine Shoemaker/Schoonmaker was born 28 Sept 1766 in Walpack, Sussex Co., NJ. Alexander Swartwout died 25 July 1825 in Exeter, Luzerne Co., PA and was buried in Forest Hill Cem. His widow Catherine died on 6 July 1832 in Exeter, Luzerne Co., PA and was also buried in Forest Hill Cem. Then follows a list of 9 children for them. Do you need their children's info? Their first child was born about 1784, per the book, thus the estimate of 1783 for their marriage. Doesn't say when Alexander Swartwout came to Exeter, so perhaps the marriage occurred back in PA/NJ. I know who Alexander Swartwout's father Thomas Swartwout was... he was my husband's ancestor's brother. He was born c. 1730 in the Peenpack, the son of Bernardus Swartwout and Margaret DECKER. Thomas Swartwout moved to Upper Smithfield with his parents c. 1735 when that area really opened up for settlement because the original warrant owners started selling off pieces of their huge land grants obtained from the Penns. Thomas lived south of what became the town of Delaware (first Bucks, then Northampton, then Pike Co., PA). He never left. He died there c. 1801. The Swartwouts, Brinks, Shoemakers/Schoonmakers, Deckers, VanEttens on both sides of the Delaware River inter-married for over a hundred years. Many of the families who left the Minisink after 1780s seemed to migrate together and settle in the same places, such as around Exeter in the Wyoming Valley of Luzerne Co, PA and in Tioga and Chemung Co., NY. 3. According to Swartwood researchers, Sarah SWARTWOOD (b. 1785), daughter of James and Martha Swartwood of Ellis Creek, Barton twp., Tioga Co., married a "Joseph Langford". I do not have their marriage date. A "Joseph P. Langford" is a head of household on the 1820 census living in Spencer, Tioga Co. There is a female in the age 26-45 bracket in his household. I assume she is his wife. There are also 8 children. But then in my VAN ETTEN records, I have this information: Jemima VAN ETTEN b. 1786, daughter of James VAN ETTEN of Tioga Co., NY married "Joseph P. Langford". Was Joseph Langford and Joseph P. Langford the same person and was he married twice? If married twice, who was his first wife and who was his second wife? Any help clearing this up would be appreciated. Helen Graves
