- Hi Eddie and Listers, How exciting to hear of your latest trip as I grew up in McDowell County in the coal mining towns of Hemphill and Superior close to Welch. My home in Hemphill was still there 20 years ago, but the one in Superior was gone with only coal dust over the area. I just learned from Charleston today that Superior still has a post office but very few residents. Maybury is a common name in England although I do not know the part of the country it is from. Matoaka is the town of "October Sky." I understand that the man represented by the principal boy in that movie has or is going to retire from NASA right here in Houston. By the way, if anyone on this list has seen that movie, whether from a coal mining family or not, please rent it and see it. What a wonderful movie that is, one of the best.
