One of my ancestors is a John Haven (Heavins) [c1726-1782] who was an accused Tory. I am told that there is an old log cabin which might have been owned by him which stands near Radford on Plum Creek one mile from New River on Route 11. Has anyone seen this cabin? Was it owned by my John Haven or (as I suspect) by the John Haven who built the Lovely Mount Tavern? Does anyone know the ancestry of the latter John Haven? Thanks, Phil
The following books make reference to a John Heavin or Havin of SW VA and might be of interest if you haven't already seen them. No mention of the log cabin, though. Anonymous, The Preston and Virginia papers of the Draper Collection of Manuscripts Madison: State Historical Society of Wisconsin, 1915 Names John and his sons James and William as being tried for treason in Aug. 1780 (Montgomery and Botetourt Cos., VA). Harman, John Newton, Harman genealogy (southern branch) : with biographical sketches, 1700-1924 Richmond, Va.: W.C. Hill Print. Co., 1925 Mentions 1837 marriage of at least one Harman to a (later?) John D. Havens; cites an 1840s Harmon will naming Peggy and John D. Havin; book also mentions the Plum Creek area in relation to some road work. --- Phil Crowther <crowther@southwind.net> wrote: > One of my ancestors is a John Haven (Heavins) > [c1726-1782] who was an > accused Tory.
