    1. [SW_VA] RE: Clay County War
    2. Eddie,      I'm just getting around to reading your comments about the Clay County War.  I might add my own rendition of shootings that happened in earlier years.     Yes, Manchester, KY, is in Clay county.  My dad built the old courthouse during the CCC program in 1938 that has been/is being demolished to build a new courthouse.   Protests weren't strong enough to save the historic building.     I was a baby.  We moved to Manchester and lived in a two-story frame house across the street from the construction job.  Considering the Depression times and lack of employment, it's true that one had to protect himself from whatever violence might occur in the community.  Firearms were often carried.  Our frontdoor was riddled with bullet holes.  The jailer lived next door.  His wife prepared meals for the prisoners.  It was said that men would perform illegal acts to get arrested so they would have food to eat.  People in Manchester were good to my family, often giving us garden produce and meat.       My mother used to tell me the story about a shooting that took place just a few doors from us.  We lived in the business district of town.  One night, my parents heard several gunshots and the following day it was learned that the local judge (Lyttle), his brother, and two Manning brothers had exchanged gunfire in the square.  Judge Lyttle crawled into a small cafe/tea room owned by his aunt and died under a table.  Newspaper reported he had as many as 18 gunshots.  The aunt waited several hours before getting up enough courage to go out into the street.  When she opened the door, she stumbled over the other brother's body.  No one was prosecuted for the murders because there were no witnesses.     It seems there had been other shootings/deaths in this same Lyttle family a short time before this incident.       Somewhere in my files, I have the detailed newspaper reports of this shooting.            Pat
