    2. Joan, A holler is the hollowing out between the hills--a trough. Usually there's not much room for too much between them. Most I ever lived on was mainly a creek and a little flat area and then the hillsides. By the way, where I am from, they well earned the name holler. We could literally stand at one end and yell so that it echoed down the creek...thus, holler.
