Gotta a question, again, this also relates to my search for an ancestor and goes along with the divorce question. Eddie writes: The dates cited in association with the "forbidden to remarry" reminded me of a pattern that I saw in my research. I have found a pattern of divorce and "base born" children during the time of the Civil War. 1855-1868 . Now my question: Exactly what is "base born?" I have found that the ancestor evidently had a child while the husband was away at war. How would I go about finding maybe a record of that birth? Thanks, <<<>>> In VA there was a period about 1855 - 70 when birth and death were kept locally. They give some date. The info was record when someone just dropped by the courthouse and reported it. I notice the 'thoughtful' neighbors usually reported the base born.
