We always kept a little jar of lard mixed with salt to spread on chigger bites. This killed the chiggers and by the next day the bite would heal and not itch. It was great. I made some this summer when my grandson got into a mess of chiggers. It is the salt that works and the lard is used for a base to hold the salt on the skin.
