I'd like to add that there is a very good book called "Albion's Seed" by David Hackett Fischer ISBN# 0195069056 that has a great deal of information on housing and building practices, along with other customes and folkways of the British in America. I am reading it now and recommend it highly. The information is too extensive to post here, but if you are patient I may be able to paraphrase some of it.
