I don't know if there was a custom, but my Grandfather wore a Straw hat in the summer time, and in the winter time he wore a Felt Hat. He saved his good Hat for Church. Most men would always wear some type of head covering, saving their best one for church. I don't think I ever saw my Grandfather David Vance go anywhere with out his hat. He even wore long underwear under his work clothes in the summer time. I remember seeing him once as he went to bed, he even wore them. He and his Hat would be wringing wet with sweat when he came in from working in the fields. He said this kept him from getting a cold. He was a Coal Miner, farmer and logger.
