During the Civil War there was a man named White who was ordered to report for military service in Washington county, Va. but he decided to "hide out" and went to a cave along North fork Holston River, not far from his home..He made a living for his family by building furniture inside that cave and selling it to flatboat operators who were transporting salt from Saltville, Va. down to the Mississippi..I have heard that a table made by Mr. White is still in existance in Washington co.
