Members, If you are new to computers and the internet for genealogy work, you should be aware of two valuable tools. ATTACHED FILES: You have the capacity to attach a _FILE_ to an email message. It is like taping a letter to a box of documents and mailing the whole thing at the post office. The "attached file" can be anything. {you can not attach files to post to the List} In our case, the attached file can to gen. data to an individual member. The file can be a text file or a GEDCOM file. Look at the program you use to send email. Click HELP and search for or look for ATTACHED files or ATTACHMENTS. Read the directions. Try sending a file to someone just for practice. Also, learn to receive and save an attached file from others. GEDCOM FILE: A gedcom file [file name has form of 'filename.ged' ] is a special data file that was designed to help people share gen. data from their gen. programs like Family Tree, PAF, Ancestral Quest, etc. Look in your genealogy program. Click HELP and search for EXPORT or GEDCOM files. Learn to EXPORT files. One of the types that can be exported is a GEDCOM file. You can control what goes into the gedcom file. You can put everything/individual into the file or just one individual. Or one individual and his/her family, her ancestors, his descendants, and their families. This allows you to share as little or as much as you wish. You can also IMPORT these files to your database or into a newly created family file database. Practice doing this just for fun and experience. Try it. These are basic tools that will increase your fun. -sysop "Toto, I don't think we are in NH any more."
