    3. Regarding people moving back and forth between Va. and Ky: During the period 1770 to 1800 many people went or started to Kentucky and returned to safer areas because of the Indian attacks on cabins and forts. Daniel Boone started with a party from N.C. and Va. in 1773 hoping to settle in Kentucky but they were attacked in Powell Valley and turned back..They were driving cattle and the Indians scattered them and killed several in the party..Many of them not only returned to Va., but went back across the Blue Ridge Mountain to N.C.. Later, Harrod and some others established settlements in Ky. but all of them were harassed by Indians and many returned to Va.. Boone and his axmen cleared a path and Henderson led a group through Cumberland Gap in 1775 to settle in Ky and as they were going they met many people who had seen enough and were returning to Va. Benjamin Logan also established a fort and took settlers to Ky in 1775..All of the Forts were attacked causing the fainthearted to pack up and leave but some who were in charge of the Forts managed to keep their parties together.. Boones fort had to be abandoned at times because they did not have enough men and ammunition to defend it...Once when Boone took a group of men to the salt springs to make salt in the winter, he managed to get all of them captured by the Indians, including himself..When he returned about six months later, his wife had given up and thinking he had been killed, took her children and returned to N.C...No doubt, there were others who returned with her..Reuben Herrall and Rebecca, his wife and several of their children left the New river area of Montgomery County, Va and went to Ky but Reuben and Rebecca returned to Washington County, Va. where he died, but Rebcca went back to Ky and died there...Some of their children and decendents moved on to Arkansas..I don't know why Reuben returned to Va., it wasn't because he was fainthearted, he was known as an Indian fighter and was in the Battle of Kings Mountain..
