    1. [SW_VA] Suggestions for finding HATFIELD-CRABTREE obituaries?
    2. Mike Curtis
    3. Hi Everyone, I'm hoping for a bit of advice here, as I'm not having much luck tracking down my great great grandparents, Davis Wesley HATFIELD and Nancy Jane (FIELD) CRABTREE. Davis W. HATFIELD died 28 March 1928 in Saltville, Smyth County, VA. His death certificate says he was buried in Riverside, VA. The undertaker is D.R. Henderson. I would like to a) find his grave and b) find his obituary. I have been unsuccessful at both. Among other things, I have done the following: - Sent a letter to Henderson Funeral Home in Saltville. They gave me limited information, but neither of the two items I am looking for. - Visited the Smyth-Bland Library in Marion. Went through the microfilm for the Marion newspaper looking for the obituary. It wasn't there. - Visited the library in Saltville. I was told that they only have obituaries going back to the 1950s. - Visited the library in Tazewell. Looked in the Obituary Index compiled by Ashley Nuckols. Other related HATFIELDs appear there, but no Davis. - Visited the cemetery at Riverside United Methodist Church off of Long Hollow Road. Davis HATFIELD had been a trustee there at one time. I checked all of the marked graves but there were no HATFIELDs at all. - Visited the OSBORNE Cemetery north of Tannersville where Davis's brother, Samuel Greer HATFIELD, and other family members are buried. No Davis. - Visited the Smyth County Courthouse and looked through birth, marriage, death records, will books and deed books. While there was a lot of information on these families, I couldn't find anything to specifically resolve these issues. My problem with his wife, Nancy (FIELD) CRABTREE is worse because she died sometime around 1902, which means I don't even have a death certificate for her since they weren't available in Virginia during that period. In all my searches for Davis HATFIELD I also searched for Nancy, to no avail. I even went through the entire year of 1902 in the Marion paper looking for an obituary but came up empty. As a side issue, Davis HATFIELD married Nancy's sister, Emma (FIELD) CRABTREE on 25 Feb 1903. She apparently died prior to 1910, but I can't find her anywhere either. Does anyone have additional suggestions of where I might look further? I welcome your ideas. Thanks in advance for you help!
