My Cooper relatives of Lee County have been known to us since the 1850 census. At that time, Elizabeth Morris Cooper,40 lists as head of household with four children. George is 20. Martha is 17. Catherine is 15. Mary is 12. By the 1860 census, Elizabeth has died George is married and the daughters are living with Morris kin or benevolent neighbors. In subsequent records, all list Elizabeth as mother and VA as place of birth. A father is not listed in any marriage record. Elizabeth is the daughter of Elias Morris of Montgomery County, NC who migrated with his family to Lee County. Somewhere, she perhaps married a Cooper who possibly abandoned the family leaving them with understandable despisal towards him and the necessity of moving to their Morris relatives for survival. We have the record of later success of our Cooper and Morris ancestors as good citizens and devout Primitive Baptists in the SW VA area where many still are. We are proud them.
