State of Virginia Washington County On this 27th day of November l832 personally appeared in open court, before the justices of the court of Washington county aforesaid now sitting, being a court of record, John McCulloch a resident of the said county, now in his seventy first year of his age, who being duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7, l837. The said John McCulloch was born in Albemarle county in this State and is now in the seventy first year of his age--In the year l769 his father removed to this part of Virginia then a wilderness and settled on Mockinson Creek and the said John has continued to reside in this country ever since. In the year l777, in April, when the said John was in his fifteenth year he volunteered to defend the frontiers against the Indian savages and served one month under Captain John Campbell at the Rich Lands on Clinch. The next year he served one month more being the month of July under Major Daniel Smith in defending the same frontier against the savages. He then volunteered for a tour to Kentucky, men having been ordered there to defend Boones Station--He marched on this tour under Capt., George Adams & served upwards of four months, having been detained longer in service a week or two than some of the other men. In l780 he volunteered for the expedition to South Carolina which ended with the battle on Kings mountain and Capture of the Troops under Furguson. In this campaign he served under Col. William Campbell and in the company commanded by Lieut. McCulloch his father--was in the battle--and near his father,, who fell mortally wounded in the heat of the action. He marched on this expedition about the first of September and was discharged about the 20th of October making his time of service, some days over six weeks. The said John McCulloch hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that hhis name is not on the pension roll of the agency of the State. Sworn to and subscribed the day and year aforesaid. /S/ John McCulloch And the said court do hereby declare their opinion after the investigation of the matter and after putting the interrogatories prescribed by the War Department that the above named applicant was a Revolutionary soldier and served as he has above stated. The court further certifies that it is well acquainted with Michael Fleenor, Ezekiel Hobbs, Robert McCulloch and that they are credible witnesses--also we are of opinion that Captain James Keys is a credible witness. I David Campbell clerk of the court of Washington County in the State aforesaid do hereby certify that the foregoing contains the original proceedings of the said court in the matter of the application of John McCulloch for a pension--And do further certify that John Keller and Francis Preston are magistrates of this county duly commissioned and qualified and that their signatures to the affidavits of Michael Fleenor, Ezekiel Hobbs, Robert McCulloch and James ? hereto annexed are genuine in Testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed the seal of said county this 4th day of December l832 in the 57th year of the Commonwealth /S/ David Campbell I do not have affidavit of Michael Fleenor, Hobbs, or Robert McCulloch
