Hi everyone, Wanted to let everyone know what a good time I had at the workshop hosted by the Lee County Genealogy/Historical Society and if you missed it you missed a great time. The society members were great hosts and Mrs. Sheila Hunt gave two very interesting presentations. If you have not attended one of her classes or workshops I highly recommend it. I drove two hours and it was well worth it. I made several new contacts and found three new "cousins". Researching Haynes, Sturgill, Rasnic, Robinette, Cress, and many others in Virginia. Hello everyone, I made a trip over to Russell County Virginia this past weekend. Very happily got permission from the Dale family to hike up and find my ggrandparents old homestead. George and Amanda (Worley) Patrick. They lived in a place my mother refers to as Lickskillet but on the map it used to be part of Hansonville. We took 19 north from Abington left on 58 and then left again on 613 just before Bolton. Is anyone familiar with this area? I am trying to find info on this Patrick line and have gotten no where with it. It was very exciting walking up the cow path dodging cowpatties all the way to that old house. I can imagine what it looked like in its day and it was a very very nice place. I did find out that George and Amanda are supposed to be buried at the Greendale cemetary which I will visit on my next trip, even though I had information that said Amanda went back to Richlands after George's death and is buried there. We also continued down 613 and saw where some of my Uncles/Aunts were born and saw what used to my grandmother Lillie Bell (Patrick) Vencill's little log cabin in an area called Tumbez. I understand that if we had continued down 613 just a little farther we would have come to a small cemetary right on the side of the road that is where my grandfather Arch Vencill is supposed to be buried. I will have to try and go there on my next trip also. We visited Kemper and Tiny (Patrick) Hawkins' homestead on 58 just before the old Bolton store and the turn to 613 also. A Beatrice Hawkins (daughter of Edgar and granddaughter of William Oscar Hawkins) lives in the old Hawkins home and we discovered that we are apparently cousins. (My grandfather was also William Oscar Hawkins) I also discovered that my grandfather is buried in Grassy Creek at a church there and plan to visit that on my next trip. ***************************************************************************************************************************************** Kathy Busch Department of Student Life Guilford College 5800 W. Hi Listers; > I am researching the family of Hugh Smith, possibly with a middle inital of S. He may have been born in Rutland, Worcester, Massachusetts. His birth date is 17 Dec 1857, according to his probate records, in Washington County, Indiana. He married Mary Hutton, daughter of James Hutton, either in Pennsylvania or Virginia. Hugh Smith did live in Washington Co., Virginia for some years, as some of his children were born there, and later some of these children went back to marry at the Glade Spring Presbyterian Church. Daughter Nancy and husband Edward Hutton stayed and lived in Washington Co for some time. About 1790 Hugh Smith and family migrated to Mercer County, Kentucky. Then about 1831/32 he, his wife and most of his children migrated to Washington County, Indiana. His eldest son, James and family migrated to Missouri abt 1821/22. > Hugh Smith died in Washington County, Indiana abt 1841, his wife Mary Hutton Smith died in May of 1838. Both are buried in Washington County, Indiana. > If anyone has any information on the above Hugh Smith, I would appreciate the clues that would lead to his birthplace and parents, siblings if any. I will gladly share family information. > > Judy Smith/Colorado "Sorting out the Smith's" including Hutton, Orr, Todd, Scott, Comingore, Dickson, Williams, Magill and many others. > > > ==== SMITH Mailing List ==== > If you wish to subscribe to or unsubscribe from the Smith list, use > SMITH-l-request@rootsweb.com or SMITH-d-request@rootsweb.com if > you are on the Digest list. >

It's me again <grin> I have added 6 files to the site dealing with the Revolutionary War in the Southern Department. They are: -Proclamation by Lord Cornwallis after "...compleat victory obtained over the Rebel forces..." at Guilford Court House. This proclamation is the one referred to by Greene in his letter to the President of Congress dated 3/30 as "rediculous [sic]" -Greene's report on the Battle of Hobkirk's Hill outside Camden, SC -A letter from Robert Stark regarding his treatment by the British while a POW -A Proclamation by Greene promising retribution for any further acts of violence against American prisoners. -Greene's report on the Battle of Eutaw Springs Note: I ran out of time at the Archives yesterday so I had to photocopy the last 5 pages, thus some areas that were too light to make out on the copies are indicated with [?] in the transcript. I should be able to get there this week and get that totally proofed. -List of killed & wounded officers at Eutaw Springs The site URL is: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~familyinformation/ Click on the Link, Revolutionary War Reports & Letters of the Southern Department. The NEW files are so indicated. Paul Sarret has put together a good web site on this period in American history which can be found at: http://members.aol.com/esarrett/sc/arw_0idx.htm Enjoy your Memorial Day Week-end, but don't forget those who sacrificed in order that we may enjoy our Liberty! Billy P.S. As usual, feel free to forward this to anyone you feel who would be interested.
This may be a tad late but everyone please practice "safe computing", i.e., not downloading any attachments unless you verify with the sender that they sent it. I have daily been receiving 10-12 e-mails with attachments such as "main1930.zip" or email with the subject, "W32 Klez Removal Tools" and the attachment, "install.zip" and sundry other "zip" attachments. I suspect these are variants of Klez but I ain't willing to download it to test my anti-virus software. I would offer this suggestion, if you are not expecting it, don't accept it. No one should be upset if you question an unsolicited "zip" (or any other) file sent from their address. To paraphrase Ben Franklin, "we all hang together or we shall certainly hang separately". Good luck to all, Billy P.S. The attachment names are varied and the sizes vary also which leads me to think it may be Klez as that worm is known to add garbage to the infected file to increase it's size so as to prevent anti-virus software from easily stopping it based upon attachment name or size.
I have made some additions to the Revolutionary War files at the site. I have added: 1) Daniel Morgan's Report on the Battle of the Cowpens 2) Nathaniel Greene's Report to Congress on the Battle of Guilford Court House 3) Letters from Greene to Congress about the pursuit of Cornwallis after Guilford (the latest one, 4/23/1781, goes into some detail about conditions in the Southern Department) 4) Reports from Francis Marion to Greene (one is an extract in which Marion praises the Bladen county, NC militia for their part in harrassing Cornwallis' troops) Rather than continue to list these individually in the NEW section, I have created a Link there to a section in the History Transcripts entitled "Revolutionary War Reports & Letters of the Southern Department" and placed the items in chronological order. If for some reason the link doesn't work (it did with IE & Netscape), just click on Transcripts at the main index page, then History and scoll down. The main URL is: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~familyinformation/ I realize some may not be interested in the history per se and that there are few rosters, lists, etc. in these reports and if so, my apologies, but the first hand reports by the people who made the history I find too compelling to not share. I particularly urge everyone to read the 4/23/1781 letter from Greene to Samuel Huntington, President of Congress, about the conditions Greene and his army are laboring under. It adds quite a bit to my understanding of what was going on at that time. I hopefully will be adding a few more next week if time permits. I am restarting a LARGE transcription project (over 700 pages-can anyone say carpal tunnel?) relative to the Fetterman "Massacre" in 1866 and really want to get that rolling again in addition to working on this fascinating period of American history. Best of wishes, Billy
Hello Leah, Rich Valley is now in Smyth County, but according to a land deed I have from 1850, it was once part of Wythe County. While I don't know if that was still true in 1870, it might be possible that your people are listed in the Wythe County Census. That is the only theory I can come up with. Sharon Hanshew-Quillen ---Original Message--- I have researched BOTH Ancestry.com's Virginia Census database index and Smyth County, Virginia's 1870 Federal Census at my local LDS family history center. Ancestry.com's database for the 1870 Smyth Co. census lists: John HOGSTON Nancy C Hogston Samuel Hogston Daniella Hogston Samuel Hogston ALL of the above names are said to be listed/ living in Smyth County, Rich Valley Township's 1870 Virginia census on page 82. When I view the actual microfilmed 1870 Smyth census documents at the history center, not only are the above names NOT on Page 82, they are not anywhere on the Rich Valley Townships rolls. Can anyone help me find these people? Or direct me in a new path in hopes of finding them? I would greatly appreciate it. I posted this to another list dealing with some of the same areas, so please excuse it if this is a duplication. I live in California and have only briefly been to the general locality where many of my ancestors lived in the 1700's: Tazewell, Washington, Lee, and Smyth counties in Va, as well as the city of Bristol. They were the Wittens and Cecils, near Witten's Fort in Tazewell, and Darby McCarty's family who married into the Hays and Gillespie families etc. I have not been able to go much farther back for some years now, but obviously there is a "dead end" somewhere on every line. I have started to be interested in the general stories of the lives and places in those days, though of course any productive research about my own family would be great. My husband and I have been talking for some time about just driving around the area, and perhaps trying to think about what the area would have looked like a couple of centuries ago. We plan to do this in June, for a couple of weeks. I did once get an 1828 marriage certificate for Enoch McCarty and Nancy Gillespie from Bristol City, so I suppose I could see if any official records were there, which I might have missed, as I have been working from 3000 miles away. I do have some deeds from Washington County, which were found in LDS records. In other words, I dont know of much new in the way of records which I might be able to uncover when we go to this area to look around. I thought I would inquire if someone who knows this area better than I do would have any suggestions. Are there any little-known places where I might find records which I have not known about? We do plan to follow some of the old "trails" and migration paths, where possible. Any other suggestions, either for records, or interesting places? We did visit Witten's Fort some years ago, and it was very moving to me. Anelle McCarty Kloski

I am looking for information on George Patterson who bought some land next to his, from Walter Stewart's heirs. Walter Stewart d. Mar 1798 Fayette Co., KY and was married to Ketreena Patterson.
As Bruce Willis, or rather, since these are family oriented lists, Roy Rogers said: YIPPEE-KI-AAAAA!!!!!!!! The last county, Wake, is now complete and posted. I have begun the work of going through the Alpha index in search of "missed" Carolina claimants. I believe the current count of names is 2,113. Since I was at the W's when I finished Wake, I began the proofing backwards (no comments from the peanut gallery...<LOL>) and got U-W inclusive finished. I did run into a couple of surprises doing that. At least 2 people who were "missed" were the executor/excutrix of estates which had been already added with no information found. I did find two people who were missed but I suspect they fit into family groups as no state was listed and the claim number was sequential with others of the same surname and county. One example is Sarah D. Dupree of Wake. I have put a question mark behind the county on such entrys to distinguish them. I have played a bit with the formatting but still have two versions out there, XHTML with cascading style sheet and straight HTML. If the XHTML does not work or the presentation is out of kilter, try the other one. Be sure to drop me a line if that was the case and include your browser type & revision (Help, About). This may load a bit slow to load so let me know also as the file size is now 445K. If too slow, I can (and likely) will break it in half. The URL for the site is: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~familyinformation/ with a direct link on the main index page. If for some reason that link doesn't work, simply go to Transcripts/History and it will be listed on the NEW section. It will be sometime in mid-May before the final notification goes out. I will try to upload any significant changes but between a new project at work and going to the New Orleans Jazz & Blues festival for a few days during the first week in May as a birthday present to myself, time is going to be short. In the meantime, I will work on transcriping a letter / report from Daniel Morgan to Nathaniel Greene on the Battle of the Cowpens as well as trying to refind the letter Greene wrote to Washington? detailing how he, Greene, was being forced to pay SC militia with slaves confiscated from Tory slaveowners in order to retain the SC militia in service. As always, feel free to share this information with anyone you feel may be interested. Gabby, uhhh, Mike Deloach, will have the latest text version posted at NC GenWeb soon, that URL is http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/ncstate.htm Happy Trails to All! Billy

Whew! I can see the light at the end of the tunnel! I have added the following counties to the database (8,495 rows of data so far=8,495 name entries): Orange - completed this big one, surnames beginning F-Y Pasquotank Perquimons Person Warren Washington Watauga That leaves only Wake county which will be a monster addition, 2 pages of 2 columns/page, and after that going through the Alpha index to find any missing people from the County index. NOTE: I did this version in a somewhat different language, XHTML vs straight HTML., though I have a copy in both formats at the main index page but try the first one, XHTML, first. If it doesn't view correctly just hit your BACK button on the browser and click on the "HTML" version directly below. I have tried this on 4 browsers and it worked on all 4: IE 5.5, Opera 6.1, Netscape 6.2, and AOL 7 (a funky mixture of Netscape & IE). I will try it later on the daughter's PC with Netscape 4.2. If it doesn't work, please send me an email, bjmarkland@aol.com, OFF LIST telling me the browser type & version (usually you can click on HELP, ABOUT to find that info out). Also I have redone the Transcripts/History/Letters portion of the site using a Cascading Style Sheet to get a common look to all of them. Most, if not all browsers, should work on that. My concern is readability. Take a look at them if you have time and drop me a line, OFF LIST, whether you like the background, font darkness, spacing, etc. The site URL is still at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~familyinformation/ and, as always, feel free to share this with anyone you think may be interested. Sandy, yes the Davidson files are already posted. Harold, I have the Yazoo county, MS page copied and will get to it soon, after Wake, NC and several TN & VA counties. If you want a text copy, Mike DeLoach has posted the NC claims on USGenWeb at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/ncstate.htm#military and the Carter county, TN file at http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/tn/carter/cartermil.htm (I really think he is hoping I get carried away like for NC and do all of Tennessee! <grin>) I will be doing taxes tomorrow (my sentiment is, "Why waste a perfectly good last minute"!) so it may be late Monday or Tuesday before I can reply to any mail. Best of wishes to all, Billy
