    1. [SW_VA] Whitt, Sexton and Callam
    2. Nikki Hartman
    3. I am researching my maternal family tree -- the Whitt's and the Sexton's. Below is what I know right now about this family. I will be happy to share any information that I can. I hope that someone will be able to help me fill in the blanks (and there are a lot of them right now). Thank you for any help that you can provide on any of these people. Willie Arthur WHITT- Birth 6/28/1901 in Ivanhoe, VA - DOD: 7/12/1962 in Winston-Salem, NC Married Dillie Gertrude Sexton 2/17/1923 in Forsyth County. Children - Richard, James and Billy Whitt Siblings - Harvey, Romey and Robert Whitt Gently/Gentle and Melinda WHITT(unknown dates) - Said to have moved to Winston-Salem in 1912 from Virginia. Unfortunately, I don't know much more about them at this point. These names came from an obituary and I am not sure if his true name was Gentle or if that was a nickname. Dillie Gertrude SEXTON- Birth 11/19/1905 in Grayson County VA. Died 07/24/1991 in Winston-Salem, NC. Married Willie Arthur Whitt in Forsyth County, NC 02/17/1923. Siblings - Ed, Worlie, Garnet, Thelma Cummings, Minnie Brown, Bessie Goins and Minnie Hester. John L. (possibly Len) SEXTON-- b. 06/07/1873 in Independence VA. Died 09/18/1934. Parents are unknown at this time. Susan/Susie/Suzannah CALLAM/Callahan (names are different on every obituary) b. 03/08/1875 in Grayson County VA. Her siblings were Charlie Callam from VA, Cora Nichols from VA, Delia Callam of VA, and Minnie Libbs of VA. It is rumored that she is an indian. I am researching this line. Her parents were said to be Tom Callam and Annie Martin. She married John L. Sexton in (we assume) Virginia. Thank you again for any help that you can give. I am especially interested in any census or record look ups that can trace their path. Nikki

    1. [SW_VA] Site Updates
    2. I am going to do a 2fer on this email: both family & history update notification. First, I have updated both the NC & VA Muster Roll Extracts. I have proofed about 60% of the NC currently and in the process added several pages that were too faint to photocopy. For the VA file, I have added approximately 75 to 100 new names from the 1st VA. The site URL is listed below & there is a direct link under the "New" section. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~familyinformation/ Family wise, I have finally found the HARMAN/MARKLAND photo Lee sent (I had forgotten you had embedded it in a Word document) and gotten that posted. Also, I added the photo of George B., Isobel, & Lavina Markland's grave stone located at Gardner Cemetary, Gardner, KS (about 17 miles south of me). I plan on slipping even further south (about 30 miles) to Ottawa and locate the grave site at Highland Cemetary for Isaac WATSON & Cynthia Markland WATSON this week. I suspect Isaac & Cynthia are the reason George B., Lavina, & Isobel ended up in Gardner (they are about 15 miles apart). I will also try to get by the courthouse and see if there are any deeds or wills for the WATSON side. Everyone have a nice 4th, Billy

    1. [SW_VA] Williams - Harvey
    2. I was looking in some marriage records today and found a marriage between James Williams and Susanna Harvey. The marriage took place June 1, 1826 in Grayson Co., VA. The surety was Thomas Williams. I have a Thomas Williams in my direct line who married Mary Harvey. My Thomas Williams lived in what was then Wythe Co., VA., what is now Smyth. He was a brother to Elizabeth Williams who married William Bonham in Grayson. (I have a direct line to them as well) I do know that there was another Thomas Williams other than mine in Grayson County around this time but the Harvey thing seems like a strange coincidence. I have never been able to find a thing on my Mary Harvey and would love to know if anyone has any information on this family or any Harvey's in these areas. My Thomas Williams also had a brother named Isaiah who married a Margaret Harvey. Any info is greatly appreciated. 1. [SW_VA] Raliff/Baldwin
    2. I am looking for information/family connections to "Shade" Ratliff who was killed digging coal out of a coal bank in the early 1900's. He was married to an Orpha Baldwin and has several children. I have not been able to locate a marriage license but family stories say they were married and after he was killed, Orpha went on to raise the children alone. I believe they lived around the Little Prater area of Buchanan county Va. If anyone has any information please email me at bhale7904@aol.com. I am at a dead end on this one.... 3. Pardon the cross-posting for those on multiple lists. I added a couple more items to my site under "New since June". There are a couple SS-5 apps for a Lester/Webb, a Helton, and a Shreve death certificate. For those interested in WWI info, I have completed uploading all the photos from my dad's Army album. These are from his experience in the AEF-Siberia. Enjoy! http://omega84.com/genealogydocs.htm Sue Lester Patterson mailto:omega84@ev1.net --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 1. [SW_VA] VA Muster Roll Extracts
    2. I have added portions of the VA Rev. War muster rolls to the site. The additions are all from the 1st VA Regiment, Capt. Pelham's Company, and start in 1777 till 2/79. There are more, I just haven't gotten them yet. Due to the several months of muster rolls from this company, there are many duplications of names as men were sick or on furlough for consectitive muster periods. To avoid anyone trekking to the site unnecessarily, the names extracted so far follows this message. The condition of the original rolls from which the microfilm was made was poor so far, with the writing extremely faded in most cases. Therefore, what you see is what I think I saw <grin> and was directly off the film. The site URL is: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~familyinformation/ with a link directly off the main index page. I will be adding more as time allows. And as usual, feel free to forward this to anyone you think may be interested. 1. [SW_VA] 6/20 Update NC Rev. War Muster Roll Extracts
    2. I have updated the database with about 120 or so new names. Unfortunately, work has absolutely prevented me from proofing the photocopy entries against the film. I hope to make a significant dent this Wednesday (like I hoped last Saturday and last Wednesday and today <groan!>). Anyway, the URL for the site is: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~familyinformation/ There is a direct link at the main index page to the database. Also, I copied 10 or so sheets from the VA 1st Regiment but had to skip many more as the majority of the frames on the microfilm were too faint to copy. I will start on that and get the VA names I have entered typed up, again, hopefully this weekend (I ain't counting on nothing after the last 2 weeks!). Does anyone know if there were regiments of the VA Continental troops largely composed of western VA folks? Once I get a decent amount of names entered, I will send them on over to Jeff to add to NCNR. By the time he gets through painting, moving, etc. I should have something for him worthwhile. enough to add. By the way, if anyone gets a hit off these entries, let me know. As always, feel free to forward this to any who you feel may have an interest. Best of wishes, Billy P.S. My apologies for all who received multiple copies of this. I only send this info out to lists I subscribe to.

    3. I've added a couple more pages to my site. They are the first 2 entries under "New since June", and have to do with the trial in the death of Reese Lester, and the tragic death of Virgie Lester. At the bottom of each page, I added a little box with brief family history to orient you as to who they were related to. 3. Hi Volks, Two years ago I set up a Fincastle history list but it never got off the ground from lack of contributions. I still have it but it is inactive. I have thought of making it a Southern Appalachian culture discussion list. Not directly genealogy or history but more culture unique to the southern mtn folks and their contribution to the making of America. If a few people express real interest we could do it. Then we could have lengthy discussions without annoying the members who are just hanging around for a hot tip on their genealogy. Let me know. -eddie owner of List

    1. [SW_VA] NC Muster Roll Extracts
    2. Now I remember why I never transcribed any muster rolls from the 1st NC Regiment!!!!!!!!! Anyway, the unproofed version containing all the 1st NC except one sheet too faint to read as well as a portion of the 2nd NC Regiment has been posted. I will proof it Wednesday against the film (I made copies and they are not the best quality due to the faintness of the orignal document on the film). Hopefully I can get rid of many of the question marks. These extracts contain surname, given, rank, regiment, company, muster roll date, and any relevent comments included in the muster roll. I only extracted the names of people who were listed as dead, wounded, sick, missing or deserted. Some men were listed as absent at Hospital. Since I have no idea whether they were sick or pulling some type of duty, I simply did not put any classification beyond listing Hospital in the remarks. The site URL is: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~familyinformation/ and I have put a direct link in the NEW section. Please feel free to pass this on to anyone you feel may be interested. Now time to head to the ballpark and watch the Royals whop up on the Cards < fingers crossed>! Best of wishes & I hope this fills in a blank for someone! Billy

    1. [SW_VA] Dale Dean Family
    2. Gary Williams
    3. I have been searching through the archives of this list and found the interesting information about Arter Dale. I don't know if there is any relation to the Dale family I am researching, but if anyone can help me I'd appreciate it. I have a Elizabeth Dale, born 1823 in VA. But this is her married name. Where I pick her up is in Wolfe Co. KY census 1900 and she is the grandmother (77) living with her grandchildren Dean. I believe her daughter Catherine Dean was the mother of these children. Catherine nor her husband are living in the household so I think they are dead. Catherine's children: this is information from 1900 census Dean William 26 farmer VVV Joseph D. 22 brother farmer VVV Ellen 16 sister sister V James 14 brother V Mahala 12 sister V Dale Elizabeth 77 gr.mother VVV Daugher Mahala is our line and her first name is Catherine also. It has been told that Mahala was 1/4 Indian. That would make her mother Catherine 1/2 and either mother or father full blooded. How accurate the story is we aren't sure. But I thought I'd see if there is any connection with Arter or any other Dale or Dean connection we can make in SW VA. A picture of Mahala we have in abt 1941 does look like she has some Indian background. She married a Campbell in Wolfe Co. Joan Williams
