Lorenzo Dow, the Inspiration of Many a Son's Name in 19th Century United States Lorenzo Dow was the name of a popular itinerant Methodist preacher of the late 1700's and early 1800's. Many families named a son after Lorenzo Dow. An excellent biography of his life is on this site. http://www.ourlittlecircle.com/lorenzo_dow_origin/ This site pretty well explains it well.
I would be most grateful if there is anyone with access to the Smyth County, VA Census for years 1860, 1870 or 1880 that would do a look up for me. Thanks greatly for the information. Your reinforcement of the fort around Glade Springs as the Snodgrass fort is appreciated; I had visited that fort/home as the guest of the owner when I just showed up one day and was apparently a courious observer. David had moved there from Berkeley county by 1776 and my line from John his brother moved to Washington county at the end of the war. I will make a visit to the fine historical society collection there for more information now that I know what to examine. Wanda, Please check the following site which is all known Snodgrass records, deeds, wills, marriages, etc. Organized by state, by county and then by date, it is a good model to show what can be done with family research and was lead by Charlou Dolan. I wanted to thank everyone who responed to my question about East Hill Cemetery. I got a lot of good ideas and information. I am in the process of following up on some of these suggestions, writting letters and phone calling, etc. Bless each and everyone of you out there. These list provide valuable info and help for family research. I wouldn't be as far in my tree if not for you all. Again many thanks. Connie in Va. This fort is located in the upper end of Washington County not far from the town of Glade Spring. According to some legends, the inhabitants of the fort were involved in at least one major skirmish. David Snodgrass (father of Colonel William and Major James) built the fort. The fort has been lived in for most of the time since its beginning. Its current owners have done of restoration work to preserve the original appearance. Last winter, the fort was on a historical tour of the county.
I have a John Snodgrass m. Parmelia Matilda CLARNAN Sept. 4, 1845 in Washington Co. VA. Has anyone heard of CLARNAN surname before? I thought the name was Clamon until I saw the marriage record but I don't see how they got Clarnan from Clamon. Wanda
Thanks, Edgar for running this list of surnames of forts. Do you know where any further information can be secured on some of them? Snodgrass, Davidson are of great family interest while Chadwell Station in Lee county by the Cumberland Gap Historical Park has a 1794 connection. Any hints will be appreciated. Jim "Edgar A. Hello Edgar, Thank you for ALL of your postings this evening. I very much appreciate the time and effort you put in here. Searching SW/VA, Debra & all, About two years ago I have a major disk crash. Only now am I getting around to recovering what was not lost. As you ole tymers (sorry) know I have typed up a lot of this stuff and periodically post it. I have been very, very busy of late and have not done much. I thought there might be some newbies that could benefit from it. Maybe I can post a few things in the coming days. I don't want to flood the List. I also recovered my gedcom file of 10,000 people listed in the 1850-60 US census. Zipped it is about 3.5 Mbyte. If there were some way to post it on the internet so people could download it, I might do that. When I think of the hours I'm tempted to sale it. LOL But it's all God's time so I will repent! -eddie Stop Parental Deliquency!! Before their children kill you!
I can add information on Fort Lee. I feel sure that it is the same Fort that my Clendenins established at the present site of Charleston WV By 1789 Colonel George Clendenin sent a report to Gov RAndolph stating Fort Lee was manned by twenty-five privates, two sergeants and one lieutenant and one captain. The Clendenins were my people and I would be glad to share information with anyone who might want information on that particular fort. I would love to hear more about all of these forts from anyone on the list. Thanks, Edgar for sending the below information. Marsha in WV "Edgar A. Volks, Anyone work the BLESSING family of Wash. Co.? -eddie Stop Parental Deliquency!! Before their children kill you!
Yes!! Boy Scouts of America provides community service projects in all communities. Just get a hold of the local Boy Scout Council Office (I think it may be the Blue Ridge Council). They can direct you to the District which serves that area. More than likely there several troops in that area who could help. Eagle Scout candidates are always looking for projects...this would be a good one. Let me know if I can be of more assistance. Kathy Hayton Cramer Clinton, Tennessee
Can anyone suggest how to go about getting East Hill Cemetery in Bristol, Va. / Tenn. cleaned up? I had relatives mail pictures of the cemetery to me recently and I was so upset. That use to be a beautiful cemetery, but it looks sad now. My mother, granny, aunts, uncles, and cousins rest there and it breaks my heart to see it like this. Even Evan Shelby's grave is all grown over with tall grass. When I was a little girl my Uncle Arville Canter was a care taker there and I bet he is rolling over in his grave right now. It really is sad to see it so overgrown. Can anyone direct me please? Connie in Va. Beach
