Hi Eddie, Yes, I am working on the same family. Hiram Litton that married Martha (Patsy) Cox. I do not know anything on her parents though. I would be happy to share what I have on them with your friend though. Nancy In Missouri
I am working on one Solomon Litton whose line left southwestern Virginia and went to Middle Tennessee. They came from near Dunkard's Bottom and intermarried with one of the BROWN families in the same area. Actually he lived in Wythe County or Montgomery co., Va...GLH >>Wow! I had not noticed that. Is it an error?? They would have been too old to have been named after Pres. Gen. Ge. Washington. Edgar, Can you give us the name of the source for the list of men that you used for the battle of King Mt.?
Arley, Lorenzo Dow was a colorful, eccentric, unorthodox and popular Methodist circuit rider to traveled widely. He also did some writing, including an autobiography. Here's one site with some biography. http://www.main.com/~djwebb/bios/dow.html
Hi, I am interested in the William Wilkerson. How can I find out more, or do you have any other information on these men? Thanks Susie
This doesn't have anything to do with this particular family but does anyone know the origin of the name "Lorenzo Dow"? I see it in an awfully lot of SW Virginia families, families with no close connections of which I am aware. Was there someone famous named "Lorenzo Dow"? Arley Edgar A. John Wood will ================================================== I have just copied for someone two wills that I have copies of and happened to think maybe someone on these lists might be interested in some of the people named. Deed Book #25, Page 27 I John Wood Sr of the County of Washington State of Virginia do make this deed of gift of my Plantation on which I now live, being and lying in the County of Washington and State of Virginia on the north fork of Holston River adjoining the lands of Robert P. Pippin, Benja (?) E. Pippin and Joel Horn, containing 46 acres be the same more or less unto Harvey and Thomas Wood to hold and to dispose of as they see proper and for their own benefit. With the following conditions that they Harvy and Thomas Wood is give their grandfather a decent support and a home during his natural life and if they the said Harvy and Thomas Wood fail to give their grandfather John Wood Sr. a decent support, he the said John Wood has the priviledge of rentting out the above named tract of land during his natural life, and Harvy and Thomas Wood is to give their Mother Naomi Wood her support of the above named land during her natural life and they Harvy and Thomas Wood is give their 4 sisters Jane, Ibby, Ellen and Sally a home as long as they may remain single and if Harvy or Thomas Wood wishes to sell their part of land as above named the one who wishes to sell is to sell to the other at a fair price, but in no wise to sell to a stranger. And its my request and desire for the clerk of the county court of Washington to record the above deed of Gift. Given under my hand and seal this 24th day of March 1860. John Wood X his mark N. E. Caldwell John B. Fleenor In the clerks office of the County Court of Washington the 25th day of April 1860. This Deed of Gift from John Wood to Harvy Wood and Thomas Wood was proved on the day above mentioned before John G. Kreger Clerk of the said county, by the oath of Nathan E. Caldwell and John B. Fleenor, the subscribing witness thereto to be the act and deed of the said John Wood and admitted to record. Test John G. Kreger THEN Deed Book #27, Page 413 I John Wood (Sr) of the county of Washington State of Va. did some years ago make a deed of gift to my two Grand sons, Harvey and Thomas Wood they agreeing to support me and there mother as long as we lived and also there unmarried sisters as long as they remained single and the consideration having entirely failed by the death of Harvey and Thomas having left home some 5 or 6 years and has never complied with any of the conditions of the said deed of gift. I consider it the deed a failure on his part and, Wishing to compensate those who has taking care of me I therefore I give to my grand daughter Mary Jane Wood my plantation on which I now live to have and to hold and to dispose off as she thinks proper and all my other affects with the following condition she is to support me and her mother as long as we live and if she fails to give us our support retain the wright to rent out the land to support me and her mother as long as we live. I desire this deed of gift to be recorded in the county court of Washington. Given under my hand and seal this 6th day of July 1868. Teste N. E. Caldwell Joel Horne John Wood X his mark In the clerks office of the county court of Washington county. The foregoing deed from John Wood senr. to Jane Wood was proved before James C. Campbell clerk of the court aforesaid by the oath of N. E. Caldwell before the aforesaid clerk on the 30th day October 1868 as the act and deed of John Wood Sr and admitted to record. Teste Jas. C. Campbell C.C. We have not found a connection between this John Wood and our John Wood who married Mary Musick, parents of William Wood who married Martha Willis. We call him Naomi's John to tell him from our John Wood. We have Woodson Wood as husband of Naomi and nothing about Naomi's parents. Woodson died before 1850 census, he and Naomi were married 08 Oct 1834, license in Washington Co., VA. Their children were according to census: Mary Jane, Elizabeth, John, Isabella, Harvey, Ellen, Thomas and Sarah. Elizabeth married John Benjamin Fleenor, son of Allen and Sarah Hobbs Fleenor. Marriage license for Elizabeth shows parents as Woodson and Nannie (Naomi, we believe) Wood, John B. and Elizabeth were married 19 Jan, 1858. When John Wood made his two wills, Elizabeth was already married. My ggg grandmother, Nancy Willis (widow of John Willis) married Allen Fleenor after his wife (Sarah Hobbs) died.
