    3. For an example of what you might see in the manuscripts, you can look at my webpage at: http://home.southwind.net/~crowther/Cocke/Draper.htm I also ran across letters which included a paragraph description of each of several early settlers. A real treasure trove! Phil

    3. You can find out about the Draper collection at familysearch.org then go to family history library catalog then do a author seach (just type in Draper) when it comes up highlight the author, Lyman Copeland Draper, go to view film notes at the top right hand corner. There are about 147 rolls of film in the Draper Collection at the FHC in Salt Lake. You can order in a film to come to the nearest Family History Center for $3.25 for 6 week loan. 3. Actually, as Edie indicates, some of the papers have been indexed. The papers have been broken down into 45 categories, as follows: A George M. Bedinger Papers B Draper's Life of Boone C Border Forays E Brady and Wetzel Papers F-G Joseph Brant Papers H Daniel Brodhead Papers J George Rogers Clark Papers K George Rogers Clark Miscellany L Jonathan Clark Papers M William Clark Papers N William Croghan Papers O Daniel Drake Papers P Draper's Biographical Sketches Q Draper's Historical Miscellanies R Draper's Memoranda Books S Draper's Notes T Thomas Forsyth Papers U Frontier Wars Papers V Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina Papers W Josiah Harmer Papers X William Henry Harrison Papers Y Thomas S. Hinde Papers Z Illinois Papers AA William Irvine Papers BB Simon Kenton Papers CC Kentucky Papers EE Mecklenburg Declaration HH Mecklenburg Declaration Miscellanies JJ Newspaper Extracts KK North Carolina Papers LL Paris Documents at Albany MM Robert Pattern Papers NN Pittsburgh and Northwest Virginia Papers OO Pension Statements PP John and James Potter Papers QQ William Preston Papers RR Randolph-Nevada Papers SS David Shepherd Papers TT South Carolina Papers UU South Carolina in the Revolution Miscellanies VV Thomas Sumter Papers WW John Cleves Symmes Papers XX Tennessee Papers YY Tecumseh Papers ZZ Virginia Papers The following Calendars (Indices) have been created: The Preston & Virginia Papers, Vol. 1 (covers sectons ?? and ZZ) Calendar of the Kentucky Papers, Vol. 2 (covers section CC) Calendar of the Tennessee & King's Mountain Papers, Vol. 3 (covers sections XX and ??) Calendar of the George Rogers Clark Papers, Vol. 4 (covers sections J and K?) Calendar of the Thomas Sumter Papers, Vol. 5 (covers section VV) Calendar of the Frontier Wars Papers, Vol. 6 (covers section U) That's it as far as I know. The breakdowns are not always clean. For example, I found material on SWVA in the Tennessee papers. Once you have the reference, you have to find a library that has the microfilm rolls to read the actual documents and the writing can be pretty hard to read. But, it's like a treasure trove of interesting information about our SWVA ancestors- including narratives and genealogies. You could probably spend a lifetime going through the information in those files and discover something new every day. 3. Hi, Edgar... We're very fortunate to have copies of the Draper Manuscripts at ETSU (East Tennessee State University) here in Johnson City. A couple of years ago, I did a lengthy study and lecture on the Draper Papers... They are a world of information, but not always easy to read and are poorly indexed and unpaginated in many cases. Best wishes, Shelia Steele Hunt

    3. In addition to the U. of Wisconsin, which I believe has the original Draper Collection, there is a copy of its King's Mountain papers at the U. of TX. I believe films of the collection are available at some other large libraries. Search the web for possible locations. Anyone who's interested can read about the Battle of King's Mountain at any number of sites online - it's an interesting part of our history. "Edgar A. Howard" wrote:Anyone heard of the subject docs? 1. [SW_VA] Suggestions for finding HATFIELD-CRABTREE obituaries?
    2. Mike Curtis
    3. Hi Everyone, I'm hoping for a bit of advice here, as I'm not having much luck tracking down my great great grandparents, Davis Wesley HATFIELD and Nancy Jane (FIELD) CRABTREE. Davis W. HATFIELD died 28 March 1928 in Saltville, Smyth County, VA. His death certificate says he was buried in Riverside, VA. The undertaker is D.R. Henderson. I would like to a) find his grave and b) find his obituary. I have been unsuccessful at both. Among other things, I have done the following: - Sent a letter to Henderson Funeral Home in Saltville. They gave me limited information, but neither of the two items I am looking for. - Visited the Smyth-Bland Library in Marion. Went through the microfilm for the Marion newspaper looking for the obituary. It wasn't there. - Visited the library in Saltville. I was told that they only have obituaries going back to the 1950s. - Visited the library in Tazewell. Looked in the Obituary Index compiled by Ashley Nuckols. Other related HATFIELDs appear there, but no Davis. - Visited the cemetery at Riverside United Methodist Church off of Long Hollow Road. Davis HATFIELD had been a trustee there at one time. I checked all of the marked graves but there were no HATFIELDs at all. - Visited the OSBORNE Cemetery north of Tannersville where Davis's brother, Samuel Greer HATFIELD, and other family members are buried. No Davis. - Visited the Smyth County Courthouse and looked through birth, marriage, death records, will books and deed books. While there was a lot of information on these families, I couldn't find anything to specifically resolve these issues. My problem with his wife, Nancy (FIELD) CRABTREE is worse because she died sometime around 1902, which means I don't even have a death certificate for her since they weren't available in Virginia during that period. In all my searches for Davis HATFIELD I also searched for Nancy, to no avail. I even went through the entire year of 1902 in the Marion paper looking for an obituary but came up empty. As a side issue, Davis HATFIELD married Nancy's sister, Emma (FIELD) CRABTREE on 25 Feb 1903. She apparently died prior to 1910, but I can't find her anywhere either. Does anyone have additional suggestions of where I might look further? I welcome your ideas. Thanks in advance for you help! 3. Eddie, That is so interesting about the links to Alsace. Tell me if you see any Myers/Moyers/Majors/Mayors in Alsace (any spelling will do). Refresh my memory. It was records of a protestant church, and the earliest dates are circa. 1560. There is mounting evidence that the Germans that came to SW VA came in groups, usually religious groups, that had lived together for generations. -eddie << There are two columns, and the first readible word in the left column is "Sontag". The first words in the second column are "Johaness Flinner". The names I reacted to were "Margaret Andes" and "Jobst Schwinfelder", which I take to be a corruption of Schwenkfelder. I note now that there is a Kegley on the list. The Andes were the inlaws of Kaspar Fleenor, and the Kegleys are thick around Lone Star north of Benhams. The Schwenkfelder reference is to that faith, and underlines that there were Schwenkfelders associated with the ancestors of the Rich Valley Germans. It is amazing how many rich valley names are on those Alsace lists. One of my best friends is a Fraley, and that name and Flinner are next to each other on those 1656 Strausburg church records. This underlines two facts: A) the people in Alsace were of mixed religious backgrounds B) The families of Rich Valley have been moving in lock step across the globe for at least 450 years.>> _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx
