    3. A big ole Merry Christmas to all. My most memorable Christmas was the year I got nothing. Dad had been hurt in the mines and out of work for a while. There was no money for toys. It was the only time I had ever seen my dad cry. It was the year I learned there was no Santa Clause and that Christmas has a lot bigger meaning in our life. It was 1937 and I was five years old. When we were children, we went to town for a "goody bag" or something, and when we returned home, Santa had been there. As we grew older, we "set" a time that we would exchange gifts on Christmas Eve with the youngest doing the work of handing out presents. If I were lucky enough to be HOME FOR CHRISTMAS today, we would open gifts tonight. Alas, the tradition changed when my son married and had children. I will be visiting my grandkids early Christmas morning to see them overwhelmed with too many commerical toys. Happy Holidays to all in SW VA. SueBee

    3. Volks, Wow! It's Christmas time again. I must be getting old.<g> Why couldn't it come this fast when I wanted my "Wanted: Dead or Alive" toy gun. Anyway, Merry Christmas to all members and their families. My most memorable Christmas was the year that Santa came on Christmas Eve. We must have been at the top of his list. For some reason, I never knew, dad took us all to town on Christmas Eve around 8 PM. We weren't gone long and when we got back Santa had come and gone. And believe it or not, mom did not even hear him. <g> God bless your Christmas memories. And let's never forget Whose birthday it is. 1. [SW_VA] RE: Clay County War
    2. Eddie,      I'm just getting around to reading your comments about the Clay County War.  I might add my own rendition of shootings that happened in earlier years.     Yes, Manchester, KY, is in Clay county.  My dad built the old courthouse during the CCC program in 1938 that has been/is being demolished to build a new courthouse.   Protests weren't strong enough to save the historic building.     I was a baby.  We moved to Manchester and lived in a two-story frame house across the street from the construction job.  Considering the Depression times and lack of employment, it's true that one had to protect himself from whatever violence might occur in the community.  Firearms were often carried.  Our frontdoor was riddled with bullet holes.  The jailer lived next door.  His wife prepared meals for the prisoners.  It was said that men would perform illegal acts to get arrested so they would have food to eat.  People in Manchester were good to my family, often giving us garden produce and meat.       My mother used to tell me the story about a shooting that took place just a few doors from us.  We lived in the business district of town.  One night, my parents heard several gunshots and the following day it was learned that the local judge (Lyttle), his brother, and two Manning brothers had exchanged gunfire in the square.  Judge Lyttle crawled into a small cafe/tea room owned by his aunt and died under a table.  Newspaper reported he had as many as 18 gunshots.  The aunt waited several hours before getting up enough courage to go out into the street.  When she opened the door, she stumbled over the other brother's body.  No one was prosecuted for the murders because there were no witnesses.     It seems there had been other shootings/deaths in this same Lyttle family a short time before this incident.       Somewhere in my files, I have the detailed newspaper reports of this shooting.            Pat

    1. Fw: Re: [SW_VA] Clay Co. war
    2. I have a couple of articles on the Clay Co. feud. One is from the AMERICAN WEEKLY, April 30, 1944, entitled "Will Law or Bullets End the Mountain Feud", with several pictures and illustrations. The article states "The petition and affadavits name some 12 families who have been engaged in a violent feud in Clay County during the preceding seven or eight in which more than 50 persons have been killed..." From the article, it appears that the CUPP's and BENGE's were some of the main culprits. The CUPP's mentioned were descendants of Charles CUPP, who was killed by Confederate soldiers during the Civil War because he refused to sell them his horses. I had thought that the feud had originated from circumstances surrounding Charles' death; however, I recently received an article entitled, "Four Young People Died" http://echandgs0.tripod.com/feuds/id4.html which says that four children of Christopher and Barbara Smith were found murdered, March 23, 1855, fifteen miles west of Manchester(that would have been "before" the Civil War), and that Walter CUPP, aged 23, and Ruben Hibbard were arrested and indicted for the murders. I wonder who this Walter Cupp was, since he would have been contemporary with Charles, and I wonder if this was the same feud mentioned in the AMERICAN WEEKLY article, since there were almost 100 years between the incidents? Many Clay Countians had migrated from Lee Co., including John Hyden (namesake of Hyden, KY.), who was Clay Co. judge for many years after the Civil War, so I'm sure he had to deal with many of the feuders. John was the brother of my g-g-g grandfather, Samuel Monroe Hyden, whose grandson, Samuel Slater Hyden, married Charles Cupp's brother's daughter. If there are no books written on this feud, it would seem a good subject for an aspiring writer to search the newspapers and court records and write a book. Don A.
