Does anyone know exactly where Cornsville was located in Scott Co?
Thanks so much to all of you who promptly answered my query about Noah Hobbs. I've copied all the information off and will compare it to my records. Genie, some of the information you sent for Indiana is definitely my Hobbs line. I am intrigued by the mention of Noah Hobbs being an early boatman on the Clinch and Holston. Genealogists are such nice people! Carol
Greetings all and Happy New Year! I have been on your site for some months and enjoy the stories about SW VA. I was there for several days about ten years ago and wished I could stay indefinitely. The land of my roots! My Great-Grandfather, Noah Reynolds Hobbs, was born in Russell County in 1805. I have periodically searched for his parents for years without success. They moved from the area probably by 1816 and went to Indiana-then to Missouri - then to Nebraska and Wyoming. If anyone on the mailing list has a Hobbs ancestor I'd like to hear from you. Otherwise, I'll continue to enjoy the information each of you contribute. Carol McManus CCMcManus@aol.com Colorado

Found these - don't know if they are yours, but might be related, and offer possible clues: Source: Scofield, Flossie, One Line of Descent, Thomas Alley, Jacob Need and Allied Lines. Neodesha, Kan.: unknown, 1973 Azby Christon Alley, b. 1806, md. 15 Dec. 1825, Noah R. Hobbs, Franklin Co., IN. Sampson Alley, b. 20 Aug. 1797, md. 28 Nov. 1819, Lucretia (Creecy) Hobbs, Franklin Co., IN. (He md. 2nd, Mrs. Susan Hillman.) These two were children of Samuel Alley of Henry, Russell and Wash. Cos. VA area, apparently all born before the family came to IN. Book has substantial info on the Alleys, including that Samuel and two of his sons left VA about 1810 by flatboat on the Ohio. ----------- Source: Addington, Robert M., History of Scott County, Virginia. Kingsport, Tenn.: Kingsport Press, 1932 No date on this specific reference, but it was from a reminiscent article by an old man published in 1914: just mentions Noah Hobbs as one of several men involved in early boating on the Clinch and/or Holston Rivers. Book also names Noah, Kesire, Elizabeth, A. J., David and Henderson Hobbs on an early but undated membership list of the Sulphur Spring Baptist Church, later called Darthula. No location other than the county. ----------- Enjoy! Genie --- CCMcManus@aol.com wrote: > My Great-Grandfather, Noah Reynolds Hobbs, was > born in Russell County in > 1805. I'm sorry if this is a remedial question, but---what does this message mean? Is this a name of a book, or a legal document, and if so, what does it mean? I'm serious, please don't think this is a joke, I really am interested as I am searching for Huffman family members. Eddie, I get these all the time. The email has come from someone that has a virus and has you in their address book. This is how these worms work. I got one from a server that was threatening to ban me, but I wrote to them and told them I had a Mac, so the virus wasn't from me. Barb > Volks, > > I'm getting this error message from Rootsweb. Mr Hearl, You don't need to re-type...Just high-lite everything and then copy & paste by right clicking....It's a great story This is the church where I performed in my first and only Christmas play. It's the Barnes Chapel church located near the old log and frame house where we lived on Rattle Creek in Washington County, VA.About 1935 when I was a small boy we went to church here and that Christmas the elders in the church decided it would be good to have the children perform a Christmas program. We were given short verses to memorize for the event and I worked on mine until I had it down real good. Christmas Eve Mama took us out to the church and they prepared for the program. Gifts would be exchanged and bags of "treat" would be passed out after the "Play" was over. All of us who were to perform were given a large letter from the word "Christmas". My letter was the first "S" in the word and it corresponded with my little verse. We were told to get up on the stage and line up with our letters but I wanted to 'See" the show, so I refused to get in line! My sister begged me, Mama begged me and several others pleaded with me to get in the line but I still refused and sank into a seat on the front row. I was a hard-headed child! All the others lined up with their letters spelling "CHRI_TMAS and the program began! I watched them until it came to my "S" and I jumped up on the stage and said, "S is for star which shines through the night!" Then I jumped back down! After the play and some singing the gifts and treat were distributed and I got a little tin horn which I immediately began "tooting" very low." I was sitting there tooting my horn and looking around when I saw Daddy and two other men come in the door and slide in on the back bench. I jumped up and ran back and showed Daddy my horn! He didn't pay much attention to me so I sat there beside him "tooting". Daddy and the other men had sold tobacco and had been to town drinking and shopping for our Christmas. I could smell the corn whiskey they had been drinking. Everyone stood for the closing hymn and when it started Daddy said, "Let me see that horn". He took that horn and blew it along with the song they were singing! I never dreamed it would blow that loud! We walked to the house and I found a little steel truck loaded with "roman candles" which I wanted to shoot immediately! Daddy lighted them and they went high into the air across the road and exploded. Everyone thought they were real purty! That was one of the few Christmases I remember getting anything and having so much fun but as I think back, I'll bet Mama wished she had gotten a Shotgun for Christmas because I'm sure she felt like killing me and Daddy both for the embarrassment we caused her that night! Bob, Most of us have a Christmas story to tell similar to yours. Sometimes I wish we were back in the good ole days at Christmas time. I think our children and grandchildren might have a better appreciation for the holiday. Back when we were doing a little storytelling, I think you told a story that I would love to see again. You had to stand in the corner because of the excuse you gave the teacher. Something about sitting over the hole on the cooking stove at breakfast. These were funny but heartwarming stories. My best Christmas as a child was probably when Santa left a tiny china tea set for my 4-yr. old sister and me (I was six). It strikes me that parents don't often buy a single present for children to share any more. It was the norm for us (except when we got socks, caps, gloves, etc.). I wish there were a little more of that kind of sharing... Genie __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable.
