Unfortunately, I haven't seen the book. A Crabtree genealogy (on Heritage Quest) lists (the Rev. R. N.) Price's "History of Holston Methodism" and cites from it a story of how Job Crabtree was converted to religion and became a minister. Another genealogy (Maclin, Clark, Cocke, Carter, etc.) quotes from Price's history an accounting of the career of te Rev. David Wendell Carter II. Also quotes from the 5th volume of the history in praise of the Hon. Nathaniel Greene Taylor. The history itself is not on Heritage Quest. :-( --- "Edgar A. One of my maternal ggrandmothers was Virginia Robinette of Bland County. She married Issac Stowers. I believe, but am not at all sure, that she was a descendant of Samuel Robinette, his son, Daniel, his son, Hiram. (Her oldest son was named Hiram Robinette Stowers. My grandfather was his brother, Steward Frazier Stowers.) Who were Virginia's grandparents and parents? I was told, by one of her granddaughters, Mamie Stowers, that Virginia Robinette's ancestral home was a big brick house and where it stood. I believe I know where that house was, at the intersection of two roads. We used to pass it when we traveled from Burke's Garden, across Round Mountain, "across Laurel", and on to Interstate77. Is that the Laurel Road? The house looked as if it had burned, and it was torn down a few years ago. Does anyone know if this was Virginia's home? I am also very interested in any research that has been done on the Robinette- Cherokee genealogy. I recently had wonderful response from a very kind and helpful person who gave me so much great material on another branch of my family. I am a native of Burke's Garden, Tazewell County, but live far away. I try to get home once a year, but never have enough time for research. I will be so grateful for any and all help with my Robinettes. Elizabeth Ann Fox Martin

I have used Paypal and find it easy and convenient. It is easy to open a Paypal account that is tied to a credit card so the amount would be charged to your account. They also protect against fraud. Nikki Humphrey

Hi All, Do they accept credit card payments? American credit cards are accepted for payment in Germany. Your bank could make a wire transfer to their account. I seem to recall that the fee was $5-$10, but I may be wrong. Phil Edgar A. Howard wrote: >Volks, > > Has anyone employed a foreign researcher and had to pay > in a foreign currency? Like Euros? Volks, Has anyone employed a foreign researcher and had to pay in a foreign currency? Like Euros? I'm trying to get some work done in Germany and they want Euros. What is the best method/cheapest to get payment to Europe? I heard Amex traveler's checks in Euros is the best. Please write to the list so everyone will get the info. (and I don't get the same info 100 times. <g> ) Thanks. -eddie . . . for there is wrath gone out from the Lord; the plague is begun. - Num. 16:46
There are also international money orders. Have you asked the researcher what form of payment they would accept or prefer? Do you trust this person or group with your credit card number? I think bank transfers are fairly common (I've done them successfully, to my son's bank account Belgium) but there may a charge on the other end as well (either for conversion from dollars to Euros or for handling, not sure which.) We have not had good experiences with travelers' checks while actually traveling in Europe (very high fees to cash them at some places, for example.) > Edgar A. Hello there is SW_VA, Looking through my wifes side of our Family Tree Maker, I find a Hannah Rebecca Hobbs, born 1745 in Maryland married to a John William Blanton in 1776, Lee County, Va. She was the daughter of a Vincent Hobbs and Mary Shelby. William Blanton is supposed to have assigned land rights to Joel Hobbs on Moccasin Creek in 1793. Enters into another one of those genealogical mazes I haven't been able to find a way out of yet!. C. D. "Skip" Whitlam "Sunny Florida"

Bluefield, VA was at one time named Graham. You might try that. Helen
My Cooper relatives of Lee County have been known to us since the 1850 census. At that time, Elizabeth Morris Cooper,40 lists as head of household with four children. George is 20. Martha is 17. Catherine is 15. Mary is 12. By the 1860 census, Elizabeth has died George is married and the daughters are living with Morris kin or benevolent neighbors. In subsequent records, all list Elizabeth as mother and VA as place of birth. A father is not listed in any marriage record. Elizabeth is the daughter of Elias Morris of Montgomery County, NC who migrated with his family to Lee County. Somewhere, she perhaps married a Cooper who possibly abandoned the family leaving them with understandable despisal towards him and the necessity of moving to their Morris relatives for survival. We have the record of later success of our Cooper and Morris ancestors as good citizens and devout Primitive Baptists in the SW VA area where many still are. We are proud them. However, we clearly need help finding them before that 1850 census. ROBERT COOPER MARSHALL,SR.
My maternal grandmother was Julia Naomi Bailey, and my grandfather was Steward Frazier Stowers. They lived in Bluefield, WV, where he was mayor at one time. I am happy to say that I know a good bit about my Stowers relatives(and am most willing to share), but so sorry that I know almost nothing about my Baileys. I believe my gggrandfather was Daniel Bailey, and he lived in Clear Fork, Rocky Gap, or somewhere in that area. I believe he married Betty Bishop, whose father was a doctor. I know my grandmother had a brother named Mason. I was born just across the mountain in Burke's Garden., but am now far away from that beautiful area. I will be so grateful for any and all information regarding my grandmother's family. Elizabeth Ann Fox Martin
You can use the soundex census which would tell you where to look. Or there are books available that list the head of household's name and tells what reel to look at. The soundex is where you take the first letter of the last name and then each consonant is assigned a number. The vowels in the name are disregarded. The names are listed alphabetically, then the first names are listed alphabetically. This is just a letter and three numbers. Any more consonants are disregarded. The code is: 1 b,f,p,v 2 c,g,j,k,q,s,x,z 3 d,t 4 l 5 m,n 6 r Thus Boswell would be B240 The 0 is added to make three numbers. Fields would be F432. Harmon would be H655. Hope this helps. CCMcManus@aol.com wrote: > Aaaurgh! Now I remember why I keep putting this mystery aside. So many > Hobbs, so little time. Amen!!! Just to add more non-information. In Lee Co VA, there is a Vincent Hobbs family that came from Maryland. His son, Vincent Hobbs, is credited with shooting Benge, the Indian, at Big Stone Gap area. The Vincent Hobbs family, of which there are millions/billions descendants, are not relatives of the Solomon/Winiford Hobbs family. I have Vincent on my maternal side and Solomon on my paternal side. I, too, would like to know the ethnic identity of both families and whether or not they have common ancestors way back somewhere. SueBee
Aaaurgh! Now I remember why I keep putting this mystery aside. So many Hobbs, so little time. I spent the evening going through all my information and found other tidbits to support the info you folks sent, but still nothing to say with certainty who Noah's parents were. The people who seem to have moved to all the same locations as Noah are Robert, Solomon, James Sr., and James Hobbs Jr. They were in Indiana and then some even moved to Missouri. I think it doubtful that Solomon and Winofred ( Winifred?) Hobbs were close relatives because they stayed on in Russell County when the rest left. Maybe distant kin. Genie, you are correct, the Samuel Alley family and my Hobbs are related. Several of the children married including: Azby Caroline Alley to Noah R. Hobbs Sampson Alley to Lucretia Hobbs Jane Alley to John Hobbs I think there were more....... G. Lee, you mentioned your ancestor, Robert Pippin, was married to a Reynolds and came to Russell co. 1795-1797 period. Also, your Pippin family line moved over to Washington Co., Va. near where some of the Hobbs family lived, and still live, in Rich Valley. I found a deed dated 5 October, 1805 where James and Rachel (Reynolds) Hobbs sold 62 acres on Carrs Creek to Robert Pippin. Perhaps Rachel and Mrs. Pippin were related. There were Reynolds and McReynolds listed in the tax rolls and census. Eddie, you asked what nationality Hobbs was. We were always told they were English. To compound the problem we were also told that the Hobbs family was a cousin to the Lees of Virginia....which I certainly haven't verified! A funny story about two of the DAR aunties ( through Samuel Alley) was that they set out to prove they were related to a wealthy man named Lee who died in Chicago in the later 1800s. When there was no further news family members questioned what had happened. It seems the gentleman was of a different nationality and those two old bigoted babes dropped their claim like a hot potato! Gee if only I were to win a week's stay in S.W. Viriginia......... Carol

This could refer to removal of "disabilities" imposed by the 14th Amendment, or by various statutes of the U.S., the disability often being denial of the right to vote, e.g. --- Brenda Rae Wimmer <brwimmer@hotmail.com> wrote: >> United States statutes at large, 1789-1873 : > Index > > Disabilities, Legal and Political, Removal of, > from the following persons, > to wit > > Huffman, A.
