As the List owner I encourage you to support this proposal and talk to others to do the same. I'm sick of the porn trash: <<WASHINGTON -- There's a potential new strategy in the fight against spam: send spammers to jail. Internet-service providers, or ISPs, and angry consumers are pushing for criminal penalties to be applied to those who fill up computer screens with unsolicited commercial e-mail. And at least in one state, they're getting their wish: A newly signed law in Virginia, which goes into effect July 1, provides for criminal prosecution of high-volume spammers. The likes of AOL Time Warner Inc. unit America Online and Verizon Communications' Verizon Online business appear eager to work with law-enforcement officials to use the new weapon. They contend spam is a form of theft and the prospect of jail time may prove scarier than civil penalties have.>> -eddie List Owner Some people try to be someone they are not. I have just uploaded the images and index for NC Disallowed Claims of the Southern Claims Commission for the year 1874. There are approximately 160 claims included. Claims from the following NC counties are present: Beaufort, Bladen, Buncombe, Burke, Caldwell, Carteret, Chatham, Cherokee, Craven, Currituck, Cumberland, Dare, Davidson, Davie, Edgecombe, Forsyth, Gaston, Gates, Greene, Henderson, Hertford, Hyde, Johnston, Lenoir, Lincoln, Madison, Martin, New Hanover, Orange, Pasquotank, Richmond, Rowan, Rutherford, Stokes, Transylvania, Wake, Watauga, Wayne, Wilkes, Yadkin In addition, I corrected a mistake and uploaded the image from the 1873 claims, page 329 which somehow I had missed. The quality of the copies was worse than the previous images and page 521 is pretty bad. That was from the page itself. I have discovered that one microfilm copier in KC does a much nicer job than the other. I will be using the "good" one on subsequent ventures in which image quality is desired. The site URL is: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~familyinformation/ The index is under the "NEW" section. By the way, I am sending this to the Martin, Dobbs, Pitt, Davidson, Rowan and NCNR lists. If anyone wishes to forward this to others, they have my permission in advance. Also, if you have problems reaching the site initially, give it a few minutes then try again. You may also wish to copy and paste the URL above into your browser address window. I did check with Rootsweb and on some of the days people had problems accessing the site, the internet traffic report, http://www.internettrafficreport.com/namerica.htm showed sharp increases in latency (delays) due to internet usage and / or network issues. Best of wishes, Billy
I have finished and uploaded the images and index for the remainder of the SCC Disallowed Claims for 1872. Approximately 50 claims are listed on these images. Counties mentioned are: Pitt, Greene, Wake, New Hanover, Cumberland, Cherokee, Harnett, Johnston, Wayne, Craven, Richmond, Chatham, Jones, Currituck, & Gates. In addition, I added the year the claim was disallowed to the index and reduced in size the 1871 images to prevent so much scrolling left to right in order to read each column. I also discovered yesterday evening that the Kansas City NARA repository does have the roll of film I am posting so I went ahead and copied the remainder of the NC claims 1874-1880 (106 pages). OK, house-keeping stuff. The site URL is: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~familyinformation/ There is a hyperlink to the Disallowed Claims index in the NEW section. For those who forgot or are new, in the same NEW section, 3rd from the bottom, is an index of ALL SCC claims from North Carolina, whether allowed or disallowed. Also, if you can not get in clicking on the above link, I would advise copying and pasting it into your browser address window. If that doesn't work, give it a few minutes, as there have been some intermittant server slowdowns experienced by a few people. That's it for now, have a good Friday. Billy
Volks, With the war and all the constant news there have been some interesting points. A few truly knowledgable people make it on TV. My favorite was the Islamic historian. He says that Berbers (pronounced barber) were raiding the Irish and Scotish as late as the 17th Century. Recall Pres. Jefferson sent the U.S. Navy to the Berbery coast to clean out the pirates raiding shipping in the Meditarenian. This is of interest because of my theory that Melungeons and "Black Irish" are Berbers. Berbers are mountainous tribes men of North Africa. An ancient people converted to Islam by the raiding Arabs. My first suspecion was that Berbers were the slaves on Spanish and Portegense traveling to the New World. Some people of Melungeon descent say their parents said they were Black Irish. Black Irish believe they are descendants of sailor of the Spanish Armana wrecked off the Ireland coast. But they could be descendants of Berber sailor instead. It's all just a theory based on some facts. -eddie Some people try to be someone they are not. I do not even try to be who I am.
Eddie, My recollection is that the boats that the berbers used were coastal vessels, not really suitable for deep water sailing. Phil Edgar A. I finally figured out a method to get the pages of the Disallowed Claims of the Southern Claims Commission for NC on-line in the most effficient (for me) manner. Transcribing or doing OCR on them was to laborious, so I have simply scanned the pages and created an index of claimants and witnesses mentioned. This can be looked at by going to my web site: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~familyinformation/ The link to the index is in the NEW section. At the index, click on the page number with the information. Current entries (1871 claims) are largely from Wake with other claims from New Hanover, Greene, Lincoln, Madison, Cherokee, and Cumberland. Let me know if I need to make the images smaller for those of you who use dial-up modems. Reply to me directly rather than clogging up list mailboxes with suggestion improvements <grin>. I don't need any list sheriffs organizing a lynch party for me!!! BTW, I was in such a hurry to get out to cut the two weeks worth of grass waiting for me, I forgot to sort the surnames alphabetically but will correct that the next installment. Hope this helps someone! Billy

My gg grandfather, Dr. Thomas Newton, married Lucinda Galliher in Wash Co Va in 1881. He was 65 and she was 42. She was the daughter of James & Betsy Galliher. I believe they lived in the Glade Springs district , but I'm not sure. Can anyone give me any info on them? I cannot find where or when Dr. Thomas Newton died or where he was buried. Lucinda died in 1891. Faye
Benjamin Logan lived on Clear Creek in Washington co., Va. and moved to Kentucky about 1775. There is a Logans Creek in Washington co., Va. it would have been in the Glade Spring District.. The Logan School was in Rich Valley, near Logan Creek and not far from the NF. Holston River.. G. Lee Hearl Authentic Appalachian Storyteller Abingdon, Va.
