    1. [SW_VA] 1872 SCC Disallowed Claims Update 6/12/03
    2. I just uploaded the disallowed claims digests for SC, TN, and TX (and two for VA who were on the last TX page-one of which is from Washington county). I have 38 pages of VA to scan to complete the 1872 claims, however, they likely will not be up for a month or so due to my being in Dallas for a couple of weeks of training. NOTE: 3 pages are sorta of messed up: 155, 176 & 177. I will be attempting to get new copies tomorrow unless the defect is found within the film. For all who forgot, the site URL is (within the brackets): [http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~familyinformation/] The index is under the "New" section. While in Dallas, I will be using the Dallas Public Library to do research in the evenings as well as the National Archives on Saturday week. The DPL has mostly genealogy records but they do have a lot of microfilm. I will definitely be looking through their Compiled Service Records of Confederate Troops from TX and TX Confederate Pension Applications to find details on a few of my HARDISONs who left God's country (NC) for the Devil's Front Porch <grin>. Best of wishes and a Happy 4th of July!! Billy

    1. [SW_VA] SCC Disallowed Claims 1872 AL-NC (& Other Stuff)
    2. I have uploaded the images for the 1872 Disallowed Claims of the Southern Claims Commission for the states of: AL, AR, FL (3 or 4), GA, LA, MS, NC. I have still to scan & index the 72 Disallowed Claims for SC, TN, TX, and VA. Those states will consist of 69 images. The uploaded states, including NC, include 94 images and approx. 900 names. Hopefully I can get most of the remainder done this week but no guarantees. The URL for the site (contained within the brackets) is: [http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~familyinformation/] The 1872 Index is listed under NEW. Users with smaller monitors will be happy to know that scrolling should not be an issue any longer as I scanned these to a smaller scale. I have also gone back and rescaled the 1871 images. Now to the "other stuff." Last weekend I went over to the genealogy library at Independence, MO to look through their fiches of the American Serial Set for some other research. While not finding exactly what I wanted, I did find some very interesting info on other subjects such as the Dartmoor Massacre and the Court of Inquiry for the sinking of the USS Huron off the NC coast during a storm. I copied the Dartmoor Massacre investigation and ran out of both change and time so wasn't able to copy the complete USS Huron file. I did get the casualty list which I will get online soon. Before scanning and OCR'g 55 pages of documents, I started looking on the Web for references. I did not find a transcribed version of the documents, however, I did find scanned images of the same. And as an added benefit, the site is supported by the Federal Government under the control of the Library of Congress (and who said the gov't wasted ALL of our money <grin>). This site, A Century of Law Making, U.S. Congressional Documents and Debates, is a treasure trove for the genealogist and historian. The URL is (again within the brackets): [http://lcweb2.loc.gov/ammem/amlaw/lawhome.html] They have not included all the American Serial Set as of yet and I will send an email requesting information as to their plans and schedule for updating. I will keep you all informed as I gain information. That is it folks, sorry about being so long winded. Oh, as usual, if you have any issues with the SCC documents, send them to me directly so as not to clog up the list servers. Also, as usual, feel free to forward this email to any who you feel might be interested. Best of wishes, Billy

    1. [SW_VA] Tazewell County 1930 Census question
    2. Robert Crabtree
    3. I am interested in knowing if any subscriber with the Ancestry.com Census Subscription are having problems with viewing census images for the 1930 Tazewell County Clear Fork districts. I have been having problems since October. It was fixed for a short time and worked great but broke again. I have reported the problem numerous times with no fix in sight. I get canned answers or they say it may take several more months to fix. All other census districts such as Wythe and Smyth Counties are OK. Also, their historical newspapers subscription and The Bluefield Daily Telegraph is great for the few years they have. I found a marriage announcement for my grandmother and grandfather among other interesting items actually pin pointing where several of my relatives lived in the 1897 and 1905 time frame. Unfortunately, their contribution to this project has been stalled for some time. Any comments on this item would be appreciated. Robert Crabtree

    1. [SW_VA] NC SCC Disallowed Claims 1878 & 1879
    2. I have uploaded the Digest of Disallowed Claims for NC for the years 1878 & 1879. Counties referenced are: Alexander (7), Brunswick (6), Burke (7), Caldwell (3), Camden (1), Carteret (9), Catawba (3), Chatham (9), Cherokee (7), Craven (3), Cumberland (13), Currituck (5), Dare (1), Davidson (1), Davie (3), Duplin (1), Forsyth (8), Franklin (4), Gaston (2), Gates (10), Greene (3), Guilford (3), Harnett (7), Haywood (2), Henderson (7), Hertford (6), Hyde (3), Jones (2), Lenoir (3), Lincoln (5), Macon (1), Madison (6), Martin (1), McDowell (4), Mitchell (3), New Hanover (9), Northampton (1), Onslow (1), Orange (13), Pasquotank (16), Perquimons (4), Person (3), Richmond (12), Robeson (2), Rockingham (1), Rowan (1), Rutherford (2), Sampson (5), Stokes (3), Surry (2), Tyrrell (1), Wake (23), Walker [sic]* (1), Watauga (3), Wayne (6), Wilson (1), Yadkin (8). As far as the Walker county reference, based upon the town given, Elkville, I think they are talking about Wilkes county but that is just a guess. The surname is DULA. I have downsized the images 5% in order to reduce scrolling for people with 15 inch monitors. I understand that there still is scrolling required, just not as severe. Eventually I will go back to the preceding images and downsize those about 10% which should help the 15 inch people immensely. However, that will come after scanning the remainder of the 1872 images for the Confederate States...yes, I copied them this past Wednesday. No time table on completion, maybe I can get significant work done this coming Wednesday night / Thursday morning as I have to be on a conference call all night and morning for a cutover. The URL is (copy and paste text within the bracket) [http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~familyinformation/] The NC Index is listed under the NEW heading. Any comments, suggestions, or problems send them to me directly rather than clogging up the mail lists. Also, as usual, my permission in advance to forward this to any interested parties. Best of wishes, Billy

Also has anyone had luck getting documents from Scott County? I would like to obtain the will for S.R. Neil but would have to mail a request. Thanks for all your help! 3. There was lots of gold mining in NC. The United States' first gold rush was supposedly in 1799, Little Meadow Creek, Cabarrus County, N.C. Try this site (and many others) for more info: http://www.lib.unc.edu/ncc/gallery/goldrush.html The site below specifically mentions an 1830 "rush": http://www.mintmuseum.org/craftingnc/02-02-001-a.htm --- "Edgar A. 1. [SW_VA] 1871 Southern Claims Images
    2. WARNING: This does not pertain directly to NC nor any specific county or surname!! Since I had the copies of the complete 1871 Digest of Disallowed Claims of the Southern Claims Commission, I scanned those pages this weekend rather than doing the NC 1878 & 1879 images. The 1871 Digests consists of claims from the following states: AL, AR (3), GA, MS, NC, SC, TN, & VA There are also claimants and witnesses from NY, NJ, & PA as well as one ship's captain who's state was unidentified. I have only put a master index up so far which is sorted by Surname, Given Name, and State. Shortly I will place a main index page link for all things pertaining to the Southern Claims Commission, but this will do in the short run. I am up in the air regarding copying and scanning the years 1872-1879 for the remaining states. That will depend upon time and if I have a few extra bucks in my pocket as the files get thicker <grin> The URL for the site is: [ http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~familyinformation/ ] Copy and paste the above URL between the brackets. The Master Index is under NEW. Best of wishes, Billy P.S. Anyone has my permission in advance to forward this to others who may be interested.

    3. These were claims people in the South made against the federal Govt. after the war for property taken supposedly for military use. Troops also often looted stores out of greed or vengeance and commandeered horses, wagons, services or foodstuffs with a promise to pay, etc. See the following site (or others) for an explanation. http://www.state.tn.us/sos/statelib/pubsvs/sccintro.htm --- Arley Meadows <ameadows@dol.net> wrote: > I am sure I have missed some emails - what do > these "Disallowed Claims" pertain > to? 3. Eddie & All: During the early 1930s a tornado or cyclone hit Rye Cove School. It was near the Ky-Va line but I don't know which state it was in. Seems to me it killed about 40 children who were in the school at the time. The Carter Family recorded a song about it. Does anyone have the words to the song? G. 3. Eddie, The last tornado which hit Abingdon, Va. was about 1942-43. I was outside playing and the wind blew so hard I could lean over into it at about a 45 degree angle. I was amazed at the force of it. I lived about five miles west of Abingdon, it didn't hit where we lived but they were building a new building at the trade school on the east end of town and the wind actually twisted and bent the heavy steel framework. I think it went across Taylors Hill which is a few blocks north of Valley Street. Many years ago, a tornado came up North Fork Holston River and it lifted Aunt Susie Stanfields house off the foundation and sat it down flat in the yard. She lived where the campground is located. Back then most people had kerosene lamps with the big glass globe. It sat the house so easy it didn't knock the globe off her lamp! True! G. Lee Hearl Authentic Appalachian Storyteller Abingdon, Va.

    2. I uploaded the images and index for the Digest of Disallowed Claims for the years 1875-1877 inclusive. Some of the counties from which claims were filed are: Martin, Beaufort, Jones, Craven, Johnston, Carteret, Wayne, Rowan, Stokes, Davie, Yadkin, Lincoln, Richmond, New Hanover, Forsyth, Guilford, Davidson, Wilkes, Watauga, Gates, Hyde, Dare, Orange, Sampson, Moore, Franklin & Wake. I hope to start scanning 1878 & 1879 tomorrow if the weather cooperates and it rains so I don't have to mow grass <grin>. The site URL is: "http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~familyinformation/ " Copy and paste the contents within the quotation marks to your browser's address bar. The index is listed under NEW. 2. Jeanette i have found thomas and mary in the census.ive even found thomas with his parents champ and esther.and im pretty sure that ive found mary hudson with her dad william hudson in the census.thomas was born in 1838 and mary in 1840.what i can not find is a marriage record or date for thomas hayton and mary hudson.ive looked in smyth county and washington county virginia and they have no such record on them.i can find no one that knows anything about them as far as marriage.they had a son named william and he married ellen johnson in 1888 in johnson county tennessee.ive searched several counties in tennessee thinking maybe thomas and mary could have been married in tennessee also but found nothing yet.in the census of 1880 it list thomas and mary along with a daughter named harrett a and a son william.ive asked several of williams grandkids and they know nothing about their grand dad's sister.these grand kids say their parents never spoke of their grand dad thomas or grand mother mary.im starting to wonder if there is something they are trying to hide in this matter that they dont want me to know.ive found that a lot of the older people dont like to tell stuff that happened back then.i do believe that somebody in the saltville area or some of these great grand kids of thomas know something about this thomas and mary.ive talked to several haytons in the saltville area and they know all kinds of stuff on thomas's brother harvey litchfield hayton but the only thing they know on thomas is that he married mary hudson.i wish there was a index of marriages for the state of virginia that had ever county in it.and the same for all states.i do know that mary died september 1 1892 . and this was reported by husband thomas with no parents given.i can find all kinds of information and marriages on thomas's parents and back and from their son william forward but no marriage on thomas and mary.this is the only link i need to find and prove.any help or ideas on this problem would be very appreciated.thanks for your time .
