My ggrandfather, John Marcum's death certificate list him as being buried in American Legion cemetery in Inman, VA in 1949. Is this a legitimate name of a cemetery? Any help would be appreciated. Tony
The above named newspaper has had its entire archives, 1841-1902, placed online by the Brooklyn Public Library. This includes ads, obituaries, and of course, news articles. Great location for news to put 19th century genealogical events into some historical perspective, or if like me, to spend a few hours reading at random <grin>. Anyway, the link is below within the brackets: [http://eagle.brooklynpubliclibrary.org/] Enjoy, Billy

Hi All, I am trying to find the death record for a William Lewis Denney/Denny. I sent to the state vital records but they did not have a listing. I am not sure if they tried both spellings of the last name. Willilam Lewis Denney/Denny used both spellings in official documents. I know he had to have died by September of 1920. If anyone can help with a lookup we would really appreciate it. Laurie

I have included a page on the web site below on the Lee County Veterans Memorial Wall. Page includes the names of the KIA written on the granite centerpiece, pictures and a brief narrative of the dedication ceremony. From the main menu, click Family History, then Military History & Images. Please leave any comments in the guest book. Thanks, Don -- Donald E. Eddie, The Creeper trail is a rails to trails biking, hiking and horse trail which runs from Abingdon to the NC line by way of Whitetop Station. It is 34 miles long. It begins in Abingdon, Va. near the approximate location of Blacks Fort. The fort was located near the Greensprings Road and the main NW railroad. Five hundred people gathered for the building of Blacks Fort. I believe there was a spring inside the fort for drinking water when people had to seek safety from the Indians there. G. Hi Volks, Anyone live in or near Abingdon and know of the Creeper trail?? We are researching the old Black's Fort. Write me if you can help. -eddie
They also have a full microfilm set of the Draper Manuscripts- a rich resource for SWVA that has barely been tapped. Just a note for researchers who find themselves in the Dallas, TX area. If you have the opportunity to go to the Dallas Central Library on Young St., GO! They have oodles of microfilm from each state broken down by General then County. For instance, they had an extensive collection for Tennessee (almost more than on Texas!) on microfilm including: Compiled Service Records for Union Volunteers, ALL the Confederate Questionaires (which is much more complete than the book) plus a roll of Union Questionaires, the Confederate Veteran & Widow Pension application series, Carter County Chancery Records (found out why my g-granddad and his first wife disappeared as a couple <grin>) and Deed Books, delayed birth & marriage records for the counties, ahh, the list is too long to remember. For the people in Rowan and Martin county, they had a pretty decent collection of films for each family including the Martin County Deed Books and Will Books, birth records for Rowan as well as the will books as well as some rolls for the the Western Carolinian and the Yadkin & Catawba Journal. Logistics. Parking is expensive but they have an underground garage which is $8.00 a day. Parking on the street is allowed up till 4 p.m. and after 6 p.m. but that is 25 cents for 15 minutes (1.00 / hr). Street front parking is free on Sundays. Microfilm copies are 25 cents / copy and the printers tend to pick up any darkness present in the film. Take plenty of change although they do have a change machine which accepts up to $5.00 bills. Parking payment is automated and will not take anything larger than a $10. Warning, it returns the change as all quarters (felt like I had hit a jackpot in a casino when I paid a $4.25 fee with a $10 bill <grin>). Homeless people abound in the area of the library so personally, I like the underground parking as I don't have to worry about being accosted for cigarettes, etc. Security is very good and the staff helpful. The seventh floor (most of the genealogy stuff is on the 8th floor) has historical records, telephone directories, and microfilm of old TX and other states' newspapers. There is a nice finding aid for the TX papers, an index of all names mentioned in the collection. For instance, I found one relative, W.J. HARDISON, sheriff of Martin county, who was endorsing some patent medicine in the late 1800s. All in all, a worthy addition to any researcher's list of places to visit. Billy P.S. Pardon if many of you receive multiple editions of this. Hardison & Markland researchers, I have stuff to add to the web site soon.
Bud and all, What is the creek that runs down by the VA Creeper? It goes into the Town creek near there. I think that is down by Greensprings road. There is a mill pond/dam on it behind the courthouse. Or behind Martha Washington Inn. -eddie
Volks, Did ya see Gods & Generals? What was the Spanish term of endearment that Stonewall used in addressing his wife? This is trivia. <g> Remember August is a good time to visit Abingdon/Wash. Co., VA and work on genealogy. That is the time of the Highlands Festival. -eddie VA
Peggy: Have you ever run across a connection to Jesse Fuller, Sr? Born about 1800, I believe in Russell County, VA..I decend from his son James, then Stephen and then Stephen's daughter Martha Fuller, who lived in Wayne County, West Virginia. Interesting to me because I live in Anderson County, next county over from Roane!! Kathy
