    2. Volks, I do not like to get into virus chat here but things are getting ever worse just like the rest of the world. I am getting email supposedly from MicroSoft.com . There is a Patch attached. I seriously doubt it is from Microsoft. Be very careful with strange email. Do not save or execute files of unknown origin. I do not believe you can be harmed from post to this List. You probably should have some virus protection software installed on your computer. -eddie owner of List

    2. Phil Crowther
    3. Thanks, The thing that got me started is a book by Patricia Givens Johnson called "William Preston and the Allegheny Patriots". It quotes extensively from the William Preston papers. The Havens/Harman marriage is interesting as I have both in my family. However, it appears that they were from Tazewell County, and I have nothing on Haven/Harman families in that area. The John D(avidson?) Haven appears to be a son of Howard Haven and Martha Davidson. 3. Pat, Thanks. I had been looking everywhere for my copy of the write-up in Vol. 1. (I found it filed in my wife's Harman file, since that is the article that preceded it.) I was not aware of information in Vol. 2. I will make a note to look for it. Looks like the stories that John, Jr died while incarcerated are true. He was tried as a Tory (along with his sons and several others) in Aug 1780 and by Nov 1780, the county appointed someone else to take over his dutues for repairing the roads, as he was dec'd. However, people apparently did not hold a grudge, since my ancestor Isaac Stephens (who fought in the Continental army and lost family) married John's daughter Rebecca in 1782. I am told that there is an old log cabin which might have been owned by him which stands near Radford on Plum Creek one mile from New River on Route 11. Has anyone seen this cabin? 3. The following books make reference to a John Heavin or Havin of SW VA and might be of interest if you haven't already seen them. No mention of the log cabin, though. Anonymous, The Preston and Virginia papers of the Draper Collection of Manuscripts Madison: State Historical Society of Wisconsin, 1915 Names John and his sons James and William as being tried for treason in Aug. 1780 (Montgomery and Botetourt Cos., VA). Harman, John Newton, Harman genealogy (southern branch) : with biographical sketches, 1700-1924 Richmond, Va.: W.C. Hill Print. Co., 1925 Mentions 1837 marriage of at least one Harman to a (later?) 1. [SW_VA] Thomas Campbell SEXTON & Charity CURRENT
    2. In 1816, at the age of 52, Thomas SEXTON and his wife Charity CURRENT, along with his younger children, moved to what is now Smyth Co., VA. Does anyone have a record of who these children were, and what became of them? I believe there was an Aaron, a Thomas Campbell Sexton, Jr., and most likely a William C. Sexton, but I have no proof on that last one. There were others, including a daughter. Also, Thomas had a brother named Joseph, who had children, probably a Zadok, and maybe others. Would like help sorting them out. Any wills recorded or death records, that might help? thanks for any help-- marilyn Current

    1. [SW_VA] James KING, Sarah CURRENT
    2. I read that a James King was one of the first settlers in Thompson Valley, Tazewell Co. I have been searching for a James KING, JR., married to Sarah CURRENT in Sussex Co., NJ in 1798. I can find no more record of them, and am assuming they joined one of the groups who migrated to other parts, Virginia being one of the likely areas. Does anyone have any genealogical information about the James King of Thompson Valley? Might he have had family back in NJ, and encouraged them to join him in VA? Please send me any information or ideas you might have on this. Marilyn Current

    3. I am researching several families in Lee Co. Va. Hodge, Wilson, Morris, Crabtree, Feathers and Clarkston. Any and all help is deeply appreciated. Some I have documentation for and some came from others. I hope this is not to confusing, it is sometimes so hard to explain things. Thomas Clarkston and Nellie Feathers had a possible daughter Ollie Elizabeth Clarkston. Calaway Hodge list parent as Alty, Olty, Olly Hodge on marriage Certificate. It is very hard to read. Samuel Clarkston aka Hodge is suppose to be Catherine "Kate"Clarkston's son. (d/o Thomas Clarkston and Ellender Feathers) This Emanuel lived next door to Calaway Hodge's wifes family John Wilson and to Benjamin Hodge in Carter Co. Tn. In 1850 an Elizabeth is head of house in Benjamin Hodge's household. Could this be Ollie Elizabeth Clarkston? Mother of Calaway Hodge? Does anyone know anything about this Ollie Elizabeth Clarkston? 3. I'm searching for anyone who has information, photos, stories, research, etc. to share on the RASNICK-RASNAKE-RASNIC Family of SW Virginia. I publish the Rasnick Family Newsletter and am always looking for information to print in it. I currently have three professional genealogists searching for this family, one in the United States and two in Europe and would love to hear from anyone who may have clues as to where the family came from before emigrating to Germany. I am also particularly interested in the discovery of photos of any of Jacob and Mollie Rasnick's nine children. Although I have never seen any, I have heard that photos of Lazarus and Elijah may exist. I'm also anxious to contact anyone who may have knowledge of the existence of very old family Bibles, especially one written in German that tradition says Jacob's mother gave him before leaving for America. I would also like to correspond with anyone from any of our allied families, who may have stories or any other knowledge of our family members. Thanks so much, Marie Rasnick Fetzer MarieFetzer@cfl.rr.com

It was brand new, with in room safes, coin laundry and continental breakfast, and it was about a mile from a Walmart. I was alone and felt very safe. It is convenient to the Russell Co. Library and Courthouse if you have any research to do there. I can't remember exactly what I paid, but I think around $50/night. Check the web for Super 8 Motel at Lebanon, Va. if you're interested. Have fun. Marie

    2. I`ve just learned that I will be traveling through S.W. Va. (from Bristol to Roanoke and then into D. C. and hope to do a little genealogy along the way. Just wondered if anyone con suggest a less expensive (but clean) motel somewhere north of Bristol or even in Bristol possibly. It will be about the Fri. before Labor Day so I may need to make a reservation soon. The ones right on the internet are usually much more expensive but I am unfamiliar with the area. I was related to Dorton and Castle families of S. W. Va. thanks in advance. Sue in Al.Other lines are Daniel, Barton, Preston, Grimm, Engle and many more.

    1. [SW_VA] Geo. Washington Papers at Library of Congress
    2. I started wondering, based upon the film series I saw Saturday, whether the Library of Congress would have copies of Geo. Washington's papers. The short answer is, "Indeed they do!" Those can be found at: <A HREF="http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/gwhtml/gwhome.html">http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/gwhtml/gwhome.html</A> You can either Browse or Search from the above Home page. The section, General Correspondence, seems to have more Muster rolls, Poll listings (Frederick county, VA begins on page 493), and also correspondence received from various people. The Search function is pretty good also: many references to Fincastle county, Arthur Campbell, Swearingen and Holston. Much of the correspondence has been transcribed already but not all. From what I saw, none of the muster rolls or poll listings had been. By the way, I found two slightly different copies of the letter I had transcribed & mailed Sunday: one from G.W.'s letter book and another true copy by Mr. Alexander the secretary. Thought you might be interested. Best of wishes, Billy Markland

    1. [SW_VA] Washington's Account of Braddocks Defeat
    2. One of the bad things in researching is the problem of being sidetracked. Thus it was for me yesterday while on a search for information regarding the Indian Wars circa 1866 at the CGSC library at Ft. Leavenworth. I found this film series, Records of the British Colonial Office, Class 5 with a sub-series on the French & Indian War. I initially started looking through it with hopes of gathering some muster rolls or something like that. Instead, I ended up reading the after battle reports about Braddock's defeat. The following letter / report I have included here as I thought it particularly significant. I had always read that George Washington had a temper and in this letter you can almost feel the man clinging to his self-control. This was a true copy but I imagine if the we could see the original letter, the quill would have been dug deeply into the paper at times while he was writing. I wonder if the U of VA library has the original? Sorry about being off-topic. Best of wishes, Billy Geo. Washington to Gov. Dinwiddie 7/18/1755 Records of the British Colonial Office, Class 5 Part 3: The French & Indian War 1754-1763 Roll 1 of 8 D000833 roll 19 Combat Arms Research Library (C.A.R.L.) Fort Leavenworth, KS Fort Cumberland July 18, 1755 Honble. Sire [sic] As I am favored with an opportunity, I should think myself inexcusable, was I to omit giving You Some Account of our late Engagement with the French on the Monongahela the 9th inst. We continued our March from Fort Cumberland to Frazier's which is within 7 Miles of Du-quesne without meeting with any extraordinary Event Saving only a Straggler or two pick'd up by the French Indians - When we came to this Place, we were attack'd (and very unexpectedly I must own) by about 300 French & Indians, our Numbers consisted of about 1300 well arm'd men, chiefly Regulars, who were immediately struck with a deadly Panic, that nothing but Confusion and Disobedience of Orders prevailed amongst them: The Officers in general behaved with incomparable Bravery, for which they greatly suffered, there being near 60 kill'd and wounded - a large Proportion out of the Number we had! - Our poor Virginians behaved like men, and died like Soldiers, for I believe out of three Companies, that were there that Day, scarce 30 were left alive: Capt. Peyrounie [sic] & all his Officers down to a Corporal were killed; Capt. Polson shared almost as hard a fate, for only one of his Escaped. In short, the dastardly Behavior of the English Soldiers, exposed all those who were inclin'd to do their Duty to almost certain Death, and at length in despite of every Effort to the contrary, broke and run [sic] like Sheep before the Hounds, leaving the Artillery, Ammunition, Provisions, & every Individual Thing we had with us a Prey for the Enemy; and when we endeavored to rally them in hopes of regaining our Invaluable loss, it was with as much Success as if we had attempted to stop the wild Bears of the Mountains - The General was wounded behind the Shoulder into the Breast of which He died three Days after; His two Aids de Camps were both wounded, but are in a fair way of Recovery: Colo. Burton & Sr. John St. Clair were also both wounded, and I hope will get over it. Sr. Peter Halkett with many other Brave Officers were kill'd in the Field. I luckily escap'd without a Wound, tho' I had four Bullets thro' my Coat & two horses shot under me: It is Supposed we left 300 or more in the Field, dead; about that Number we brought off wounded, and it is imagined (I believe with Justice too) that two Thirds of both those Numbers, received their Shot from our own cowardly Dogs of Soldiers, who gathered themselves into a Body contrary to Orders 10 or 12 Deep, would then level, fire and Shoot down the men before them. - I tremble at the Consequence that the Defeat may have upon our back Inhabitants, who I suppose will all leave their Habitations unless proper measures are taken for their Security. - Colo. Dunbar, who Commands at present intends so soon as his Men are recruited at this Place, to continue his March to Philadelphia into Winter Quarters: so that there will no men be left here, unless it is the poor remains of the Virginia Troops, who now are, and will be too weak to guard our Frontiers - As Capt. Orme is writing to Yr. Honr., I doubt not but he will give You a very Circumstantial Acct. of all Things which will make it needless for me to add more than that[.] I am Honble. Sir Your most Obedt. & / most hble. Servt. G. Washington. To the Honble. Govr. Dinwiddie A true Copy Attr: Wm. Alexander Secy
