    3. This message is not of the type to be expected on a serious genealogy list. It looks more like the messages that come through when my teen son is in a teen chat room. I do not believe that rootsweb would approve if they realized they were providing space and sponsoring such. Your welcome message is one which speaks of serious research, no idle chit chat, etc. Since I have been on the list, I have seen you chastise others for vearing off the main path. Now your actions are speaking MUCH louder than your words. Running a mail list is a privilege and a responsibility. Perhaps you need to rethink the resposibility part. 2. Edgar A. Howard - Sysop
    3. Hi, listowners -- This announcement is to let you know that we've just finished "closing" all of the RootsWeb lists. This means that the list server will only let you post to a mailing list if you subscribe to it. I'm sorry that this had to be done so hastily, but we didn't really have any choice. The volume of spam that was being sent through our lists had reached a phenomenal level, and I was spending most of my time on that problem rather than improving the systems. Worse, some users had begun to send spam complaints to sites that were completely unrelated to RootsWeb, but could kill our network connection if they received too many complaints. Closing the lists to subscribers became a matter of self-preservation. However, in order to make it easier on you, we've changed things to make it a little more obvious when someone who isn't a subscriber posts to your list. The list server will add the words "{not a subscriber}" to the Subject heading of their message, like this: Subject: {not a subscriber} Ancestors of John BROWN? When this happens, you can use the "bounce" or "redirect" features of your e-mail program (if such things are available) to repost this message to your list, and it should be approved for everyone to see. Or you can write to the poster and invite them to subscribe. Important to remember: some folks will subscribe to a mailing list with one e-mail address, and then try to post with another e-mail address. They don't mean any harm by this. If you notice that someone keeps trying to post to the list from an address that isn't subscribed, and you *want* his posts to be approved, you can add his address to the "accept list." To do this, follow the "Customize Settings" link from the bottom of your listowner utility page, and then choose the option to "Edit the Accept File." If you have any other questions about managing a closed list, please feel free to subscribe to NEWBIE-LISTOWNER-L and ask away -- one of our more seasoned listowners will be glad to answer your questions. -- Regards, Tim Pierce RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative system obfuscator and hack-of-all-trades

    3. <Eddie - I couldn't agree more about this book - it is wonderful. I don't know about its availability, but the author owns the Appalachian Museum in Norris TN, and I'm sure they have it. There is also a small store in Jonesville VA (Lee Co) named Fodi's that had copies.>>>> Brenda, I have read nearly 100 pages and I can't believe how great it is. If you have ancestors in SW VA, E. TN or KY or S. WV you must have this book. This book will tell you more about your ancestors than you will want to know. Their religion, superstitions, medicines, diet, courting and marriage, the truth of history, etc. It is all there. The poverty and real happiness. The joy of having a ribbon for your hair. It will humble you, make you cry and make you love your ancestors. No names, dates, or places data can do that!! Merry Christmas, -eddie

My new home page is http://www.lcc.net/~fpreston and my main genealogy pages are at http://www.lcc.net/~fpreston/prestonf.htm or prestong.htm This will not affect the SW_VA SURNAME list since they were and still are on the Fortune City address of http://www2.fortunecity.com/millenium/quarrybank/194/swabc.htm Have a Merry Christmas ... 1. NEW RIVER
    2. Yes, there was a very early settlement called the New River Settlement. Somewhere in my library I have a very old book on it.. I moved and have yet to get all of my things unpacked--I bought a computer right after moving and that, thus tells my tale!!---- I am going to try and find it asap. I might also say that from my State History in school growing up back there, that the New River area was also a Prehistoric settlement. Diana Kinzer Heath
